Borges, Joyce, and the Not-Quite-First Spanish-Language Review of\u00a0Ulysses<\/em><\/h2>\n

Join 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Visiting Scholar Dr. Leah Leone Anderson for her talk “Borges, Joyce, and the Not-Quite-First Spanish-Language Review of\u00a0Ulysses<\/em>,” part of the Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latinx Studies (LACUSL) Speaker Series being held on Feb. 16 from 3-4 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library on the third floor in the east wing of the Golda Meir Library.<\/p>\n

About the talk: Jorge Luis Borges famously claimed himself to be the first hispano<\/em>\u00a0to embark upon the odyssey of reading and reviewing James Joyce\u2019s\u00a0Ulysses<\/em>\u00a0(1922). Along with his 1925 review, he also translated the last two pages of the novel, Molly Bloom\u2019s sensation-creating, stream-of-consciousness monologue. Perhaps starstruck by the legendary pairing of two of the twentieth century\u2019s most influential authors, many scholars have taken his claim as indisputable evidence that Borges single-handedly introduced Joyce to Latin America, and of the enduring impact of his translation. This talk will reveal that the true story of Joyce\u2019s introduction to Spanish language readers is both more complex and more interesting than the one traditionally told.<\/p>\n

Dr. Leah Leone Anderson is a visiting scholar with 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Her book, Borges\u2019s Creative Infidelities: Translating Joyce, Woolf and Faulkner<\/em><\/a> (2024) was made possible with the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies’ support. Her current research focuses on the work of Argentine critic, translator, and memoirist Mar\u00eda Rosa Oliver (1898-1977).<\/p>\n
