Emily Bowe, Assistant Director of the Leventhal Map and Education Center at the Boston Public Library, and Ian Spangler, Assistant Curator of Digital & Participatory Geography at the Leventhal Center, present the 2025 \u201cMaps & America\u201d: Arthur Holzheimer Lecture on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 6 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library, located on the third floor of the 51ÁÔÆæ Golda Meir Library, 2311 E. Hartford Ave.<\/p>\n
Their talk, \u201cProcessing Place: How Computers and Cartographers Redrew Our World,<\/span>\u201d explores the how the computer technologies developed in the twentieth century drove changes in land management, law and policy, national defense, and more. Taking a historical approach to digital mapping by comparing maps made with computers to those that came before, the talk will invite us to reevaluate the relationships between maps, technology, and society.<\/span><\/p>\n There is a reception at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n Registration is required for this in-person and virtual event.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n This will be the 35th annual presentation in the Maps & America: Arthur Holzheimer Lecture series, organized by the American Geographical Society Library and supported by an endowment created by Arthur and Janet Holzheimer.<\/p>\n The lecture series was inaugurated by the noted cartographic historian Brian Harley in 1990.
