The\u00a02024 Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture<\/b>\u00a0will be presented by\u00a0Nan Kim<\/b>\u00a0(Associate Professor, 51ÁÔÆæ Department of History).<\/span><\/p>\n

What can offer resources for hope at a time of escalating ecological crisis and alarming nuclear dangers? This talk argues for approaching this question by looking to the historical and contemporary legacies of two vital public intellectuals: Rachel Carson (1907\u20131964) and Jonathan Schell (1943-2014). Credited with inspiring the modern environmental movement and the nuclear-disarmament movement respectively, Rachel Carson\u2019s Silent Spring<\/i>\u00a0(1962) and Jonathan Schell\u2019s\u00a0The Fate of the Earth\u00a0<\/i>(1982) were both landmark bestsellers of their time and remain exemplars of moral clarity as powerful interventions concerning critical issues of sweeping real-world impact.<\/p>\n

This project explores the work of these authors as models of research-based interventions which helped to galvanize collective action for bringing about transformative change in the face of pressing global challenges, despite profound uncertainty about the future. The talk also revisits the far-reaching influence of these authors\u2019 writings as testament to the power of poetic language for overcoming paralysis and creating a renewed sense of urgency in response to ethical questions of intergenerational social justice.<\/p>\n


\nAbout the speaker:<\/b><\/p>\n

Nan Kim, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of History & Co-Director of Public History at 51ÁÔÆæ as well as an Affiliated Professor of Anthropology. She serves as Faculty Lead\/PI for the Working Group on STS (Science & Technology Studies) at the\u00a0Center for 21<\/a>st<\/a>\u00a0Century Studies<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and is Core Faculty in the Graduate Programs in\u00a0Public History<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and\u00a0Museum Studies<\/a><\/u>. Kim is also the Regional Editor for Korea on the Editorial Board for the journal\u00a0Critical Asian Studies.<\/a><\/u><\/i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Her recent publications include “A New Kind of Tinderbox on the Korean Peninsula” in\u00a0Current History<\/a><\/u><\/i>\u00a0(September 2024) and\u00a0\u201cSouth Korea\u2019s Nuclear-Energy Entanglements and the Timescales of Ecological Democracy\u201d in\u00a0Forces of Nature: New Perspectives on Korean Environments,<\/a><\/u><\/i>\u00a0edited by David Fedman, Eleana Kim, and Albert L. Park, eds., and published by Cornell in 2023.<\/p>\n

Kim’s book,\u00a0Memory, Reconciliation, and Reunions in South Korea: Crossing the Divide,<\/a><\/u><\/i>\u00a0<\/i>published by\u00a0Lexington Books in 2017, was the winner of the 2019 Scott Bills Memorial Prize from the Peace History Society.<\/b><\/p>\n
