Scholarly communication is a core function in an academic library serving a research university. The array of publishing models is constantly evolving in support of open scholarship. The 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries have cultivated expertise to lead the academic community in understanding how publishing models, open access strategies, copyright, author’s rights, licenses, and other related issues impact research and teaching. To that end, the Scholarly Communication team will engage the 51ÁÔÆæ community by:

1. Developing and delivering timely education and outreach such as workshops and marketing messages regarding open access publishing options for 51ÁÔÆæ authors.

2. Identifying and organizing relevant programs with speakers to highlight the Open Access Week themes and other important topics in scholarly communication.

3. Partnering with campus units to foster dialogue in alignment with the 2030 strategic goals for open scholarship.

Scholarly communication is defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries as: “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future.”

MINDS@UW Milwaukee is an open online repository that serves as a showcase for 51ÁÔÆæ’s scholarship. Placing your work in MINDS@UW Milwaukee makes it visible and searchable worldwide for the long-term so you can share your publication widely and reliably.

As an author, you are the owner of the copyright to your work. This can be transferred partially or completely during the publication process, resulting in the loss of an authors rights over their own work. Learn more about copyright issues, negotiating contracts with publishers, and the possibilities of publishing with Creative Commons licenses.

Open access to peer-reviewed research content means it is freely available on the public internet, permitting any user to read, distribute, or use for any lawful purpose. The 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries have a few open access publishing agreements with publishers to waive article processing charges for 51ÁÔÆæ authors.

A growing body of scholarship is becoming openly accessible – in other words, available free, immediately, and online without a paywall.

The 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries have undertaken a multi-faceted approach for textbook affordability. The Open Textbook project is a partnership between the 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries and the Center for Advancing Student Learning.
