At <a href=\"https:\/\/milwaukee.bairdwealth.com\/\">Baird Wealth Management<\/a>, the first line of defense against money laundering is often dedicated interns like 51ÁÔÆæ economics major Donovan Clark, who works with Baird&#8217;s compliance office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark is a busy student. In addition to serving as an anti-money laundering intern, he\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/firstgen\/programs\/lawton-scholars\/\">Lawton Scholar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/community-empowerment-institutional-inclusivity\/services\/mcnair\/\">McNair Scholar<\/a>, and he\u2019s simultaneously earning his bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees in economics through the Economics Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/economics\/academics\/economics-ba-ma\/\">accelerated graduate program<\/a>. He sat down to talk about his internship and how economics allows him to pursue his dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-i-have-never-heard-of-anti-money-laundering-internship-what-does-an-anti-money-laundering-intern-do\"><strong>I have never heard of anti-money laundering internship. What does an anti-money laundering intern do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I knew about money laundering, but I didn\u2019t know that there were jobs surrounding money laundering, per se. I just thought it was more of something that the FBI handled. I didn\u2019t know that there were jobs about it right downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Baird is a financial institution, we get thousands of people who want to open bank accounts here, and so our department makes sure that these clients aren\u2019t using their money for nefarious means. A lot of the day-to-day stuff involves reviewing reports that highlight our clients. As the interns, we are sometimes the first ones that see these reports, and we do some of the first-hand analysis and research. We present our work to an analyst, and they build off it. We\u2019re trying to make that our clients aren\u2019t, for example, taking money from a drug cartel and then keeping the money here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-what-types-of-information-in-these-reports-stand-out-as-red-flags-for-money-laundering\"><strong>What types of information in these reports stand out as \u201cred flags\u201d for money laundering?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll give you an example. If we know that your account has $50,000 in it, then why are you all of a sudden saying \u201cI need to wire $3 million to my account\u201d? That\u2019s a little weird. We also look over reports dealing with our clients who are sending money to somebody out of the country. There are certain sanctions on certain countries. You can\u2019t send money to somebody in Russia, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re paying attention to anything that may look like a suspicious activity. If it\u2019s something that normally a client wouldn\u2019t be doing, then we\u2019re trying to make sure \u2013 does this make sense? Does this add up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We look at what scammers are doing too. We have a term called \u201cpig-butchering,\u201d for example. That is where a scammer may find someone\u2019s phone number. They\u2019ll try to develop a relationship via text and try to get you comfortable and entice you. Then, when they finally say, \u201cHey, I need you to send some money,\u201d you\u2019ll feel like, \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking for a month or so. I don\u2019t mind sending money.\u201d Then they ask for more and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-have-you-flagged-anything-that-turned-out-to-be-an-instance-of-money-laundering\"><strong>Have you flagged anything that turned out to be an instance of money laundering?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually we have good clients, so we don\u2019t really see anything too suspicious. But sometimes, we\u2019ll look in a database and we happen to see that somebody is linked to something that\u2019s kind of weird, and we\u2019re able to detect it early on. It\u2019s cool when you send it to your manager and later on they\u2019ll tell you, we did some more research and there\u2019s a whole bunch of other things going on with the person. It metastasizes to where we\u2019re now talking to (Baird\u2019s) legal team. Just knowing you\u2019re a part of that process can be rewarding. It doesn\u2019t happen all the time, but it happens quite a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-how-did-you-find-this-internship\"><strong>How did you find this internship?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the 51ÁÔÆæ <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/set\/career-communities-services\/handshake\/\">Handshake app<\/a>, which is, I think, one of the best resources for college students, especially when it comes to finding internships. You create your profile \u2013 you put your name, your major, what year you\u2019re in, your interests, and then based on your profile, hiring managers can say, \u2018We think we have a great opportunity for you.\u2019 I received a message similar to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been there for a year and a half. There\u2019s never a dull day. The best part is Baird has a great internship program. They do a great job of allowing and giving space for interns to speak with higher officials in the firm, even to the point where we\u2019ve had sessions with the CEO, which I don\u2019t think a lot of other places would really even think about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-why-did-you-choose-uwm-for-your-economics-education\"><strong>Why did you choose 51ÁÔÆæ for your economics education?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was born and raised in Milwaukee. I have a lot of family who attended 51ÁÔÆæ, so it was like carrying on a tradition of sorts.
