  {"id":30757,"date":"2026-01-06T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=30757"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:24:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:24:30","slug":"serving-with-spanish-new-service-learning-course-connects-students-to-milwaukee-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-spotlight\/serving-with-spanish-new-service-learning-course-connects-students-to-milwaukee-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Serving with Spanish: New service-learning course connects students to Milwaukee community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>\u00bfC\u00f3mo puedo ayudar? <\/em>How can I help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allison Libbey\u2019s Spanish students asked that question a lot this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Libbey, a senior teaching faculty member in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Spanish Programt, is the creator of the special topics course \u201cSpanish 391: Using Spanish in Our Community.\u201d It\u2019s a new <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/set\/experiential-learning\/engage-through-service-learning\/\">service-learning<\/a> course designed to help students hone their conversational language skills by assisting nonprofits in the Milwaukee area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany students feel like Spanish is something they do in class only, and they don\u2019t have the opportunity to do anything with Spanish outside of class \u2026 so I created this course to address that,\u201d said Libbey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students started their education in the classroom by exploring topics like Latinx Heritage Month, immigration in Wisconsin, and the job and education outlook for Milwaukee\u2019s Latino residents. Outside of class, they completed 20 service hours over the semester and turned in video reflections (delivered in Spanish, of course) about their experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Libbey worked with 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Student Experience &amp; Talent to partner with seven organizations around the Milwaukee area in need of Spanish-speaking helpers. Students could pick where they wanted to volunteer based on their interests and schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course, offered for the first time this fall, was a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been one of my favorite Spanish classes I\u2019ve ever taken because it\u2019s been so practical,\u201d said student Helena Kohlhoff. \u201cThe conversations we\u2019ve had have been eye-opening. We get to hear from a lot of different people with a lot of different perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to their experiences in Spanish 391, students walked away with three important lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-1-how-to-get-comfortable-speaking-spanish\"><strong>1. How to get comfortable speaking Spanish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The course\u2019s focus on conversation helped grow the students\u2019 language skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving a class like this, where (the learning) is all based on actual communication, has given me a lot more confidence in being able to talk to someone in Spanish and maintain my side of the conversation,\u201d said Jack Uslabar, a creative writing major who is minoring in Spanish. It helped that he found a mentor in Norma, a NourishMKE volunteer who also spoke Spanish. \u201c(Speaking) came with experience, and also hearing what Norma says at each station, so I can pick up on what certain things are called,\u201d Uslabar said. \u201cFor instance, I would know that these vegetables are green beans, but I wouldn\u2019t know the word in Spanish. Then someone would point to them and say it, and I\u2019d pick that term up and use it in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kohlhoff, a medical laboratory science major working toward a certificate in Spanish for healthcare professionals, and Spanish major Eden Skoug quickly became well-versed in phrases like \u201c<em>\u00bfQu\u00e9 talla necesita?<\/em>\u201d What size do you need? Or \u201c<em>\u00bfAlguien te est\u00e1 ayudando?<\/em>\u201d Is anyone helping you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/mrbobsunderthebridge.org\/\">Mr. Bob\u2019s Under the Bridge<\/a>, an organization that provides clothing, shoes, and other supplies and services to unhoused people in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly switching languages. You can be talking to an English speaker one second, a Spanish speaker the next second, and an ASL (American Sign Language) user another second,\u201d Skoug said. They\u2019re not kidding; Skoug also takes ASL lessons at 51ÁÔÆæ and had to put their signing skills to use as a volunteer in addition to their Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-2-how-to-prepare-for-their-future-careers\"><strong>2. How to prepare for their future careers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Ortiz is majoring in early-childhood education with a minor in Spanish and is also working towards certifications in ESL and bilingual education. She\u2019s a native Spanish speaker, so she was a perfect fit to volunteer at <a href=\"https:\/\/notredamemke.org\/\">Notre Dame School of Milwaukee<\/a>, one of three bilingual schools in the city that asked Libbey for volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are some kids there that don\u2019t speak as much Spanish, and I wanted to help them be more involved in the classroom and simplify the language so they are able to connect more with the students who may only speak Spanish,\u201d said Ortiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/01\/Spanish-organizations-sidebar-231x300.webp\" alt=\"Picture of text. Text reads Students in Spanish 391: Using Spanish in Our Community could choose to volunteer at several organizations in the Milwaukee Community, including Father Gene\u2019s Help Center, La Causa Charter School, La Escuela Fratney, Milwaukee Public Library, Mr. Bob\u2019s Under the Bridge, Notre Dame School of Milwaukee, and NourishMKE.\n\n\n\" class=\"wp-image-30760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/01\/Spanish-organizations-sidebar-231x300.webp 231w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/01\/Spanish-organizations-sidebar.webp 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only was she able to help others develop their language skills and fine-tune her own, but she also gained insights that she can use in her education major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe teacher I worked with asked me to come back next semester,\u201d Ortiz said. \u201c(I) might even do my student teaching there, because I loved making all of those connections with the students and the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Skoug, working with Mr. Bob\u2019s Under the Bridge has given them a taste of what their future career might be like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe work that I\u2019m hoping to do is similar to the work that I\u2019m doing at Mr. Bob\u2019s. I want to be able to use Spanish to serve the community as maybe a translator or interpreter. I like being able to create connections among Spanish-speaking and English-speaking communities,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-3-how-to-support-their-community\"><strong>3. Photo courtesy of Helen Kohlhoff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmpathy and compassion &#8211; those were two words that I heard over and over,\u201d she said. \u201c(Students are) not just thinking about their own little bubble anymore. (They\u2019re) thinking about the wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ortiz said she gained a new respect for teachers after watching her mentors at Notre Dame School juggle large classes while still being responsive to individual student needs. \u201cIt really made me realize that we need more Spanish teachers, or even Spanish assistants, anyone that can speak Spanish and help out in the schools, because it gets very overwhelming,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skoug said they learned a lot about Milwaukee\u2019s unhoused population and how those individuals seem to fall through the cracks. For instance, several of the people served by Mr. Bob\u2019s Under the Bridge died during last summer\u2019s flooding, but little attention was paid to their loss. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important that Mr. Bob\u2019s is creating connections with that community, and making sure those people are not forgotten,\u201d Skoug added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Kohlhoff, volunteering helped them realize that being able to understand one another is an essential part of building community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amount of joy that people have when you can converse with them in their native language and be able to help them is something that reminds me why I\u2019m doing what I\u2019m doing,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Class has ended, but Libbey says that several of her students plan to continue volunteering with their chosen organizations.
