{"id":30660,"date":"2025-12-02T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=30660"},"modified":"2025-11-30T22:27:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T04:27:57","slug":"uwm-researcher-reconstructs-ancient-landscapes-from-the-midwest-to-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus\/alumni-student-news\/uwm-researcher-reconstructs-ancient-landscapes-from-the-midwest-to-mars\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ researcher reconstructs ancient landscapes from the Midwest to Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You might think Antarctica is the most remote place someone\u2019s career might take them. 51ÁÔÆæ alum Libby Ives traversed Antarctica\u2019s ice landscapes to study glacial sediments laid down more than 300 million years ago, but years later, she found herself even farther afield \u2014 literally, if not scientifically \u2014 when she applied her sedimentary skills to analyzing Martian landscapes for NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By studying ancient landscapes, her work offers valuable insights about a planet\u2019s environment \u2014 past, present and future. But the Waukesha, Wisconsin native didn\u2019t always know geology was her path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew I wanted to do science, and I knew I wanted to be outside a lot,\u201d Ives said.
