{"id":29162,"date":"2025-03-04T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=29162"},"modified":"2025-03-04T13:18:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T19:18:18","slug":"wuwm-station-manager-makes-his-milwaukee-theater-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2025\/wuwm-station-manager-makes-his-milwaukee-theater-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"W51ÁÔÆæ station manager takes to the stage in &#8220;Emily Song&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You usually only hear him behind the microphone, but this winter, David Lee was on stage in the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee, the station manager of W51ÁÔÆæ Radio, returned to Milwaukee\u2019s theater scene in First Stage\u2019s production of Emily Song and the Queen of the Night. The show, which opened on Jan. 31 and ended its run on Feb. 16, tells the story of a young music mage just beginning to learn about the extraordinary power of her voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The play\u2019s message resonates with Lee; as the manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/\">W51ÁÔÆæ<\/a>, which is run under the umbrella of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s College of Letters &amp; Science, he knows all about the power of voices. It\u2019s his job to amplify them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow do you engage the community in a way that\u2019s representative and powerful and lifts the voices of the people that you serve?\u201d he mused. \u201cI think those challenges are magnified in media because we are a platform for our community. I think it\u2019s a unique privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee also feels strongly that as the leader of W51ÁÔÆæ, it\u2019s important for him to be an active part of the communities that the station serves. He sits on the boards of the Marcus Performing Arts Center and the Skylight Music Theatre, has thrown out the first pitch at a Milwaukee Brewers game in celebration of W51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, and now, has appeared in a First Stage production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear, Lee wasn\u2019t acting (pun intended) in his official capacity; he just really likes theater and was asked to be in the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI (am) friendly with a lot of folks in the arts and culture community \u2026 and people know that I will do things that fit my schedule. Lee attended a performing arts high school in California and later spent 10 years in Los Angeles \u201ctrying to become Chinese George Clooney,\u201d he joked. \u201cThat, as with most people, didn\u2019t work out for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Lee began working in nonprofits, first in LA and then in the Midwest. Before he joined W51ÁÔÆæ, Lee was the chief philanthropy officer for the Ascension Wisconsin Foundation. But he has always loved the stage and \u201cEmily Song and the Queen of the Night\u201d gave Lee a chance to flex his acting chops. He played Ben Song, the main character\u2019s father, who attempts to quash his daughter\u2019s interest in music in an effort to protect her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role was a fun challenge for Lee, who does not have any children of his own. Instead, he said, he enjoyed working with the talented kids in the cast and tried to model acting skills like hitting a mark, getting off-book, and being able to take a note from the director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role was also a challenge in a different way: Lee does not sing or dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a triple threat. I\u2019m maybe a single threat,\u201d he laughed. \u201cI think (the choreographer) changed the choreography of the curtain call because of my inability to complete this jump-spin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also enjoyed the show because it provided opportunities for kids of color\u2014and himself\u2014to play characters who look like them and have similar cultural backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI rarely played a person within my own racial and ethnic background. I \u2026 was always doing plays that weren\u2019t written for a Chinese man growing up in America,\u201d Lee said. \u201cI think it\u2019s really delightful to see kids have these opportunities to actually play within their cultural context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee\u2019s not sure if or when he\u2019ll take the stage again, but he\u2019s always looking for ways to keep himself \u2013 and W51ÁÔÆæ \u2013 engaged in the Milwaukee community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Sarah Vickery, College of Letters &amp; Science<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You usually only hear him behind the microphone, but this winter, David Lee was on stage in the spotlight.
