{"id":28816,"date":"2024-12-03T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=28816"},"modified":"2024-12-02T11:03:33","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T17:03:33","slug":"alum-remembers-the-uwm-teacher-who-changed-the-course-of-his-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2024\/alum-remembers-the-uwm-teacher-who-changed-the-course-of-his-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Alum remembers the 51ÁÔÆæ teacher who changed the course of his life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 50 years ago, a 51ÁÔÆæ student named John Torres met a professor who gave him the confidence to believe in himself and pursue his dream of being a journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torres and dozens of other alumni responded to an August 2024 email from the 51ÁÔÆæ Alumni Association inviting them to share a message with their favorite professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torres wrote about Sharon Murphy, who taught journalism and mass communications courses. \u201cI arrived at 51ÁÔÆæ with very poor writing skills,\u201d Torres recalled. \u201cI was ashamed to hand in my work; it would come back covered in red ink, with warnings that I was failing.
