{"id":28054,"date":"2024-08-06T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T05:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=28054"},"modified":"2024-08-02T15:37:20","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T20:37:20","slug":"student-podcaster-wins-national-award-for-spotlighting-gen-zs-financial-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-spotlight\/student-podcaster-wins-national-award-for-spotlighting-gen-zs-financial-worries\/","title":{"rendered":"Student podcaster wins national award for spotlighting Gen Z\u2019s financial worries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ student Grace Pagel won a first place national \u201cMark of Excellence\u201d award from the Society of Professional Journalists in the Podcast (Narrative) category in May. Her podcast, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mediamilwaukee.com\/audio\/breaking-the-bank-unpacking-gen-zs-financial-insecurity\/\">Breaking the Bank: Unpacking Gen Z\u2019s Financial Insecurity<\/a>,\u201d beat out other student journalists from across the nation, including competitors from institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and Northwestern universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SPJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spj.org\/news.asp?REF=3023\">Mark of Excellence Awards<\/a> highlight the best and brightest of student journalism across the United States. Judges are instructed to \u201cchoose only those entries which they felt were outstanding work worthy of a national honor,\u201d according to the SPJ website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winning the award was a welcome but unexpected honor for Pagel \u2013 mainly because she didn\u2019t realize she was competing. One of her journalism instructors, Jane Hampden Daley, had entered it in the contest, unbeknownst to Pagel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a total surprise! But the best surprise possible,\u201d Pagel laughed. \u201cI was very, very happy about that result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her podcast also took second place in its category at the <a href=\"https:\/\/milwaukeepressclub.org\/2023-excellence-in-journalism-awardees\/\">Milwaukee Press Club Awards<\/a>. Pagel had also entered it into NPR\u2019s annual College Podcast Challenge, but did not win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s okay,\u201d Pagel said. \u201cI\u2019m very impressed with the feedback that I\u2019ve gotten for this (SPJ) award in general. \u2026 I think being nationally recognized in any kind of accord is a really great honor. I think it\u2019s super-cool that SPJ is recognizing more unrecognized universities. UW-Milwaukee can definitely compete with those bigger private schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in the SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards, UW-Milwaukee was named a national finalist in the General News Reporting category for the piece \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mediamilwaukee.com\/special-projects\/beyond-the-barricades\/\">Beyond the Barricades<\/a>,\u201d compiled by several student journalists in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s journalism immersion class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pagel created her podcast as part of her final project for Hampden Daley\u2019s \u201cAudio Storytelling\u201d class in the fall of 2023. The seven-minute project features conversations with three students \u2013 two from 51ÁÔÆæ and one from Marquette University \u2013 and an interview with 51ÁÔÆæ Professor of Economics Rebecca Neumann. Pagel highlights her peers\u2019 worries for their financial future, explores financial trends with Neumann, and offers several perspectives on the worries of young adults in the 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right uwm-c-img--caption-gray\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2024\/07\/Grace-Pagel-Interview-300x200.webp\" alt=\"A young woman in a blue coat confers with a woman in an orange hat and white coat, and a man holding an acoustic guitar. Photo courtesy of Grace Pagel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Recording was an interesting experience: \u201cIf you\u2019re not using a Zoom recording mic(rophone), it\u2019s actually really easy to recreate professional sound by recording in a closet,\u201d Pagel said. She also used the recording equipment and facilities at the 51ÁÔÆæ Library and would record snippets of sound and dialogue on her way to class or when hanging out with her roommates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final result was a product that showcased Pagel\u2019s skills as an interviewer and producer \u2013 unsurprising, as she has always been interested in storytelling and radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have wanted to work in radio or be a part of a radio station since I was 15,\u201d Pagel said. That\u2019s why she chose 51ÁÔÆæ; the Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies program gives students hands-on experience and instruction from award-winning industry professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her classes, Pagel has gained experience at 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/prowl-radio-is-uwms-new-student-run-station\/\">Prowl Radio<\/a>, a student-run radio station that features music and interviews. Pagel, a founding member of the station, is now its manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes she can translate those experiences into a job after she graduates next spring. She would love to be a television newsroom producer in a larger market like Minneapolis or Chicago. Or she could produce audio for radio stations \u2013 W51ÁÔÆæ Radio and 89.9 Radio Milwaukee are her favorite hometown stations. She wouldn\u2019t be opposed to working at an ad agency either.
