{"id":27236,"date":"2024-03-04T10:58:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T16:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=27236"},"modified":"2024-03-05T11:12:35","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T17:12:35","slug":"uwm-alum-honored-with-his-first-grammy-nomination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus\/alumni-student-news\/uwm-alum-honored-with-his-first-grammy-nomination\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ alum honored with his first Grammy nomination"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2023, the band Neutral Milk Hotel re-released a box set of the group\u2019s complete works, including two LPs, a live album, three 7-inch singles, two 10-inch singles, two posters, and several postcards, all packed in a two-piece telescoping box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The box set art was created by the group\u2019s founder, Jeff Mangum, and its finishing touches were completed by Daniel Murphy, the art director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mergerecords.com\/\">Merge Records<\/a>. The intense project took years of careful planning and collaboration, and Murphy breathed a sigh of relief when it was complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, it got nominated for a Grammy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was blown away by it,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI was very surprised, and very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The road to the Grammys<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Murphy\u2019s first Grammy nomination. Murphy, who graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ in 2016 with his Master\u2019s in Media Studies, has <a href=\"https:\/\/5pt5panoramic.com\/\">worked as an artist<\/a> in the music industry for more than 20 years. Over time, he\u2019s come to understand the ins and outs of award season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2024\/02\/Daniel-Murphy-by-Elora.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27240\" \/><figcaption>51ÁÔÆæ alum Daniel Murphy is the art director at Merge records. Photo by Elora Hennessey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s common practice (for record labels) to pick a few highlights and send them to the Grammys every year,\u201d Murphy explained. Of course, major recording artists vie for the well-known honors, like Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, but the Grammys have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/news\/2024-grammys-nominations-full-winners-nominees-list\">extensive list<\/a> of more than 90 categories of awards for a range of musical genres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That also includes craft categories; among them, Best Boxed or Limited Edition Special Package. This year, nominees in that category included Jeri and John Heiden for \u201cFor the Birds: The Birdsong Project\u201d; Duy Dao for \u201cGieo\u201d; Bo Burnham and Daniel Calderwood for \u201cInside: Deluxe Box Set\u201d; Masaki Koike for \u201cWords &amp; Music, May 1965 \u2013 Deluxe Edition\u201d; and of course, Jeff Mangum, Daniel Murphy, and Mark Ohe for \u201cThe Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Murphy flew to Los Angeles to attend the Grammys\u2019 last three award ceremonies. Because of the number of awards, the Grammys are divided so that most awards are announced before the big ceremony that viewers can watch at home. Murphy was disappointed that he didn\u2019t win (The honors went to Jeri and John Heiden, art directors of \u201cFor the Birds: The Birdsong Project), but he thoroughly enjoyed attending the final ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating spectacle, just watching the production \u2026 and the barely controlled chaos of it all, is amazing. And of course, (I was) in the room with a lot of famous people,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that his seat happened to be next to the tunnel that major artists used to access <em>their <\/em>seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like, oh, that\u2019s Ed Sheeran. That\u2019s Taylor Swift 10 feet away from me,\u201d Murphy joked. \u201cIt was very strange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A career on record<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attending the Grammys was a surreal experience for a humble Midwestern native. Murphy grew up in Indiana and earned his Bachelor\u2019s degree in 2000 at Indiana University, where he majored in journalism. Shortly after graduation, he found a job in the music industry and began learning design on the job. In 2014, he needed a break from his work, so he decided to do a Master\u2019s at 51ÁÔÆæ in Media Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was looking into whether there was a book to be written on the history of the album artwork and its origins. There probably is, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019m the person to write it,\u201d Murphy laughed. \u201cBut I had a great time doing the research and learning about the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he was graduating with his Master\u2019s, the art director at Merge Records left for another job. Murphy had always loved the label and had long wanted to work there; he applied and settled right into his new role. He produces not only box set designs and album covers, but also designs t-shirts, promotional materials, posters, and any other merchandise that a band might request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, he\u2019s produced art for some well-known names in the industry, including Bon Iver, the Mountain Goats, the New Pornographers, Nickel Creek, and 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-alum-resurrects-long-lost-bob-dylan-song\/\">Trapper Schoepp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making album art is, well, an art. Think of some of the truly iconic album covers over the years: Pink Floyd\u2019s triangular prism and rainbow on \u201cThe Dark Side of the Moon,\u201d for example, or the lips and tongue of the Rolling Stones\u2019 \u201cSticky Fingers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a language to it that people have come to expect,\u201d Murphy explained. \u201cIf a band sounds kind of like The Rolling Stones, their artwork might look a little bit like the Rolling Stones\u2019. For me, there\u2019s a line to walk in being a little referential \u2026 but not too obvious. They\u2019ll see the (thumbnail) version in their streaming service, like Spotify,\u201d he noted. \u201cI want to make sure that (the thumbnail) version of the of the cover works, that it\u2019s noticeable and eye-catching. \u2026 The way that people consume music now, the cover is the first impression that I get. It\u2019s got to be a good first impression that intrigues people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If he ever lacks inspiration, Murphy can think back to his time at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose two years helped me understand that the work that I\u2019m doing is valid and important and has some sort of historical perspective,\u201d he said. \u201cIt gave me a newfound appreciation for what I\u2019m doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if he keeps on doing it, someday, Murphy may win that Grammy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Sarah Vickery, College of Letters &amp;
