{"id":25780,"date":"2023-12-07T10:03:07","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T16:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=23790"},"modified":"2023-12-12T15:33:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T21:33:09","slug":"geography-student-spots-rare-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2023\/geography-student-spots-rare-bug\/","title":{"rendered":"Geography student spots rare bug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of the newly revamped Geography Field Work course, geography professor Alison Donnelly brought students on a site visit to the 51ÁÔÆæ Field Station in Saukville, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the trip was to give students an opportunity to see for themselves the management practices and challenges associated with conservation efforts for a<br>range of natural habitats including woodland, grassland and bog. Field station manager Paul Engevold lead the students on a walk through the entire property to visit each of these unique ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While walking on the boardwalk through Cedarburg bog, undergraduate student Stephanie Barker\u2019s keen eye spotted an unusual insect sitting very still on the branch of a northern whitecedar (<em>Thuja occidentalis<\/em>) shrub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engvold came to inspect the discovery and knew immediately that it was something unusual for the bog but wanted to get a second opinion, so he emailed the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/category\/bug-of-the-week\/\">BugLady<\/a> (Kate Redmond) who immediately confirmed his suspicion by identifying the moth as a buck moth (<em>Hemileuca maia<\/em>).
