  {"id":15508,"date":"2021-04-17T11:56:03","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T16:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?p=15508"},"modified":"2023-12-04T15:31:58","modified_gmt":"2023-12-04T21:31:58","slug":"an-algorithm-for-the-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2021\/an-algorithm-for-the-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"An algorithm for the heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A doctoral student in applied mathematics has developed an algorithm that will allow heart cell researchers to get their results in minutes, rather than hours.<\/p>\n<p>John Jurkiewicz is involved in a partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/math\/\">51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Department of Mathematical Sciences<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurorahealthcare.org\/aurora-research-institute\">Advocate Aurora Research Institute. <i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i><\/a> His algorithm can isolate valuable experiment data in a fraction of the time that scientists previously needed to do the work manually.<\/p>\n<p>The Advocate Aurora lab studies heart cells, using them to measure cardiac cell function, aid in developmental studies and, eventually, help conduct drug testing. Their work involves giving the cells an electric shock and recording what happens. But that\u2019s when things get tricky.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to separate the electrical signal of activity across some tissue (called field potential, or FP) from the activity of each individual cell (called action potential, or AP). The frequencies connected to action potential are the valuable ones \u2013 a heart cell\u2019s AP can say quite a bit about its activity and health.<\/p>\n<p>Before Jurkiewicz created his algorithm, Advocate Aurora lab members had to weed out those valuable signals by hand. It would take an afternoon to parse out one day\u2019s experiment, and they were faced with 1 terabyte of data. \u201cThey came to us and said, \u2018Can you help?\u2019\u201d says Jurkiewicz, whose faculty advisor is mathematics professor Peter Hinow. \u201cSo we came up with an algorithm that can segment this data stream automatically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns out the AP versus FP classification is \u2018easy\u2019 for mathematicians to do,\u201d says Jurkiewicz, whose paper on the work was accepted for the Journal of Electrocardiology. And he made a point to run the algorithm on his consumer-grade laptop so researchers wouldn\u2019t need a supercomputer to use the tool.
