She&nbsp;will now cover&nbsp;manufacturing,&nbsp;startups&nbsp;and technology after serving as a general assignment reporter.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laurels-amp-accolades-nbsp\">Laurels &amp; Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Distinguished Professor emerita&nbsp;<strong>Trudy Turner (Anthropology)<\/strong>&nbsp;has been&nbsp;elected&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/page\/2025-fellows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 class of fellows<\/a>&nbsp;of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Becoming an AAAS fellow is one of the top honors awarded to U.S. scientists. Fellows are nominated by their peers for their efforts to advance science or its applications.&nbsp;<br>The class of 2025 includes 449 scientists,&nbsp;engineers&nbsp;and others from across 24 disciplines, including astronomy, biological sciences, chemistry, neuroscience, and physics. AAAS is one of the world\u2019s largest general scientific societies and&nbsp;publisher&nbsp;of the \u201cScience\u201d family of journals. It began the tradition of naming fellows in 1874.&nbsp;Previous&nbsp;fellows include Thomas Edison, W.E.B. DuBois, Maria Mitchell, Steven Chu, Ellen&nbsp;Ochoa&nbsp;and Irwin M. Jacobs.&nbsp;<br>For more information about Professor Turner\u2019s accomplishments, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-primate-researcher-honored-as-aaas-fellow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;Report<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor&nbsp;<strong>Miren Boehm (Philosophy)<\/strong>&nbsp;was invited to a workshop, \u201cCausation, Mind, Perception: Essays on Mary Shepherd,\u201d at Harvard University&nbsp;in March&nbsp;to present a paper on David Hume&#8217;s and Mary Shepherd&#8217;s views&nbsp;about&nbsp;the extent of scientific knowledge.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Distinguished Professor&nbsp;<strong>Karyn Frick (Psychological &amp; Brain Sciences)<\/strong>&nbsp;has been&nbsp;elected&nbsp;as a Fellow of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibnsconnect.org\/awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Behavioral Neuroscience Society (IBNS)<\/a>. Fellows of IBNS are individuals who have made substantial contributions to the Society and to the field of behavioral neuroscience.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assistant Professor&nbsp;<strong>Michael Mirer (Communication)<\/strong>&nbsp;received the journal&nbsp;<em>Communication &amp; Sport&#8217;s<\/em>&nbsp;2025 Article of the Year award. The article, entitled &#8220;The Media Answer: How Athletes Conceptualize Their Relationship to the Press in the Players&#8217; Tribune&#8221; explored the ways stories attributed to athletes on the PR platform position the role of independent journalism in the sports-media system.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor emerita&nbsp;<strong>Kimberly Blaeser (English)&nbsp;<\/strong>received the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/environment\/kimberly-blaeser-wisconsin-poet-laureate-national-book-foundation-prize-ancient-light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Book Foundation prize<\/a>&nbsp;for her&nbsp;poetry collection,&nbsp;<em>Ancient Light<\/em>. Blaeser is a former Wisconsin Poet Laureate&nbsp;who drew on memories and experiences from her Indigenous family to&nbsp;reclaim Indigenous stories and knowledge, while also reckoning with environmental destruction and violence against native communities, in her latest work. She will read some of her work&nbsp;at the Madison Central Public Library&nbsp;on April 9&nbsp;and discuss the relationship between poetry,&nbsp;science&nbsp;and current events. The&nbsp;program, \u201cScience + Literature: The Science of Hope,\u201d is presented by the National Book Foundation and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences,&nbsp;Arts&nbsp;and Letters.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-media-and-around-the-community-nbsp\">In the Media and around the Community&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wapo.st\/4m30NyJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>used Distinguished Professor&nbsp;<strong>Mark Schwartz\u2019s (Geography)&nbsp;<\/strong>Spring Indices (SI) models with output being generated by the USA National Phenology Network&nbsp;in a recent article.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor&nbsp;<strong>Rebecca Neumann (Economics)&nbsp;<\/strong>discussed the importance of financial literacy on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox6now.com\/video\/fmc-7zojdtpjmn8suj7n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox 6 News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shepherdexpress.com\/film\/film\/uwm-series-highlights-the-diversity-of-latin-american-cinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Shepherd Express<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;highlighted 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s annual Latin American Film Festival, hosted by the&nbsp;<strong>Center for Latin American &amp; Caribbean Studies<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The planets seem steady and unchanging in their orbits,&nbsp;but actually, Director&nbsp;<strong>Jean&nbsp;Creighton (Planetarium)&nbsp;<\/strong>told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/show\/lake-effect\/2026-03-02\/monday-3-2-26-trump-lawsuits-over-tariffs-and-environment-solar-system-dynamism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;Radio<\/a>,&nbsp;the solar system is a dynamic place.&nbsp;She also spoke about the Planetarium\u2019s upcoming \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/uwm-planetarium-lebanon-islamic-stargazing-traditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arabian Nights<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;shows, and&nbsp;talked&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/uwm-planetarium-director-discusses-nasas-artemis-2-mission-set-for-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS 58 News<\/a>&nbsp;ahead of the Artemis II launch that has sent astronauts into orbit around Earth\u2019s Moon.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incoming student&nbsp;<strong>Audrey Burch (Psychological &amp; Brain Sciences)&nbsp;<\/strong>spoke about her mental health struggles to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weau.com\/2026\/03\/06\/students-advocate-wisconsin-capitol-mental-health-988-hotline-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WEAU News<\/a>&nbsp;after attending an event advocating for mental health funding at the Wisconsin Capitol in March.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Susan Kerns (\u201813, PhD English),&nbsp;<\/strong>the executive director of Milwaukee Film, was the keynote speaker at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rexsikesmoviebeat.me\/2026\/02\/26\/mission-1-billion-speaker-dr-susan-kerns-milwaukee-film-ceo-wed-march-11-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mission 1&nbsp;Billion: Official Creator Network meeting<\/a>&nbsp;in March, where she spoke about film incentives in Wisconsin.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The anthropology community is beginning to grapple with the ethics of its profession.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/greatlakesecho.org\/2026\/03\/25\/study-calls-for-more-diverse-viewpoints-ethical-considerations-in-archaeology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Lakes Echo<\/a>&nbsp;spoke to&nbsp;associate professors&nbsp;<strong>Ashley Lemke (Anthropology)&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>Mark Freeland (Anthropology)&nbsp;<\/strong>about shaping university curriculums and the impact of current archaeological practices.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data center operations jobs are few and \u201cunglamorous,\u201d Professor&nbsp;<strong>Scott Adams (Economics)&nbsp;<\/strong>said in an article published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinwatch.org\/2026\/03\/wisconsin-data-center-boom-workforce-jobs-economy-development-construction-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Watch<\/a>&nbsp;examining the economics and labor markets surrounding AI data centers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/wisconsin-decline-union-membership-40-years-report-act-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Public Radio<\/a>&nbsp;noted a new&nbsp;low&nbsp;in labor union membership in Wisconsin after the passage of Act 10. Buck<\/strong>, professor emeritus of history and a longtime supporter of the university, passed away on March 6, 2026, in Milwaukee at the age of 89.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A respected scholar of modern Chinese history, Buck dedicated more than three decades to teaching and research at 51ÁÔÆæ. Joining the university in 1972, he spent 32 years as a faculty member in the Department of History, where he taught courses on Chinese history and international affairs and mentored generations of students.
