Now, Carvd N Stone has inked a deal with Amazon to \u201cshare the human side of the people behind Amazon.\u201d Stone explained her business and its new partnership on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/milwaukee-journalist-aims-to-share-positive-stories-on-community\/64654845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISN 12 News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kumara Jayasuriya (\u201893, PhD Mathematical Sciences) <\/strong>announced his retirement from his role as the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallindependent.com\/news\/local-news\/2025\/05\/i-am-a-mustang-for-life-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southwest Minnesota State University<\/a> in April, a position he has served in since 2019. This caps a career spent in various academic roles across the country. During his tenure at SMSU, Jayasuriya oversaw increases in enrollment and helped shepherd the opening of new academic programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chad Ruppel (\u201800, BA Political Science) <\/strong>was appointed the new housing director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel3000.com\/news\/madison-mayor-appoints-new-housing-director\/article_553817b2-3c80-4ed1-96fa-f83ca1474b47.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Madison<\/a> Community Development Authority in May. He was previously the Director of the Program Support Division in the Office of Housing Voucher Programs in the US. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ruppel holds two master\u2019s degrees and begins his new job in June.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Patrick Baird (\u201813, BA Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies) <\/strong>published his eighth novel, <em>Van Hoke\u2019s Caper<\/em>, a Prohibition-era crime novel. He launched the book at a signing event in <a href=\"https:\/\/doorcountypulse.com\/prohibition-era-door-county-crime-novel-released\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Door County<\/a> in May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Garvey (\u201813, PhD Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry)<\/strong> was awarded the James Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, presented by the Alliant Energy Foundation in partnership with the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU). Garvey is a professor of physics at Marian University. The award recognizes educators who support and inspire students beyond the classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ashley Smart (\u201817, BA Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies) <\/strong>and <strong>Hunter Turpin (\u201823, BA Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies and Urban Studies) <\/strong>were winners at the 2024 Milwaukee Press Club Awards. Both are reporters at <em>BizTimes Milwaukee.<\/em> Smart won a gold (first place) award in the online Best Multi-Story Coverage of a Single Feature Topic or Event category for her coverage of the dispute between Johnson Controls and its salespeople over changes to their incentive plans. Assistant Professor <strong>Michael Mirer (Communication)<\/strong> reflected on how the wreck gave the city a sense of community on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox6now.com\/news\/milwaukees-abandoned-boat-crew-works-remove-vessel-from-lakefront\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox 6 News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor<strong> Jeffrey Sommers (African &amp; African Diaspora Studies and Global Studies)<\/strong> delivered an invited lecture for the department of Politics and International Relations at Pecs University, Hungary, entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/international.pte.hu\/news\/billionaires-tariffs-jeffrey-sommers-trumps-first-100-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Policy and Politics of Donald Trump<\/a>,\u201d on May 6. He also gave the keynote lecture on May 13 for the international conference, \u201cDynamics of Change, Trends, and Perspectives in Global and European Politics,\u201d hosted by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University\u2019s Department of Political Sciences, International Relations and European Studies, in Ia\u0219i, Romania. The Episode was titled &#8220;US foreign policy and the global arena.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/making\/2025\/05\/06\/tv-wouldnt-be-tv-without-soap-operas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WBEZ Radio<\/a> aired a story about the history of soap operas and their impact on television. The station consulted Professor <strong>Elana Levine (English) <\/strong>for her expertise on the soap opera genre.
