The award was given in recognition of Kretlow\u2019s efforts in aquatic invasive species mitigation. Kretlow is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\u2019 aquatic invasive species program coordinator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Catherine Kaczorowski (\u201820, BA Psychology) <\/strong>has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Federation for Aging Research. Dr. Kaczorowski is a recognized authority in the development and application of genetically diverse mouse models for studies on aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. She pioneered the first translationally relevant polygenic model of human AD which was published in the journal, <em>Neuron<\/em>. After graduating from 51ÁÔÆæ, she earned her PhD from Northwestern University and is the Elinor Levine Professor of Dementia Research and a Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Bauer (\u201805, MS; \u201808, PhD Psychology) <\/strong>was named the director of the Casagrande Institute for Higher Education Effectiveness at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viterbo.edu\/news\/david-bauer-named-director-casagrande-institute-higher-education-effectiveness-viterbo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viterbo University<\/a>. The Institute provides assessments, analysis, and other services for clients in higher education. Bauer is a former Viterbo faculty member, having spent 15 years in the Psychology Department, before becoming a higher education consultant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels and Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arjun Saha (Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry) <\/strong>is one of the winners of this year\u2019s Catalyst Grants. The <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-research-foundation-awards-250000-in-catalyst-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation\u2019s Catalyst Grant program<\/a> is designed to seed-fund research in areas where 51ÁÔÆæ has the greatest potential to impact the regional economy through commercialization. Saha\u2019s work targets abnormal protein-protein interactions (PPI) in the body by developing new computational methods to simulate them. Abnormal PPIs are behind many diseases and his work could pave the way for novel therapeutics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dyanna Czeck (Geosciences) <\/strong>and her collaborators at Carleton and Bowdoin colleges have been award the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carleton.edu\/news\/stories\/cailin-huyck-orr-96-john-mcdaris-of-carletons-science-education-resource-center-awarded-national-science-foundation-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Science Foundation\u2019s<\/a> Geoscience Opportunities for Leadership in Diversity (GOLD-EN) grant for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2403844&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cultural Change in Geoscience (C-ChanGe) project<\/a>. The work supports faculty to work toward an inclusive and welcoming academic geosciences environment for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Carolyn Eichner (History and Women\u2019s &amp; Gender Studies)<\/strong> has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Grant for Jan 1 &#8211; Aug 31, 2025, in support of her research and writing for a biography of 19th-century anarchist feminist Louise Michel, orator, author, ethnographer, teacher, and leader in the Paris Commune. Eichner&#8217;s proposal was among the 9% funded of the 283 proposals submitted this cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece&#8217;s (English) <\/strong>new 2024 book, <em>Movies under the Influence<\/em>, received a lengthy write-up in <a href=\"https:\/\/online.ucpress.edu\/fq\/article\/78\/1\/87\/203172\/Movies-under-the-InfluenceA-Conversation-with\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Film Quarterly<\/em><\/a>. Her book explores the history and interrelationship between substance use, moviegoing, and movie genres. From the old school movie houses of the 1920s and cigarettes to stronger drugs of the 60\u2019s, Szczepaniak-Gillece&#8217;s book delves into this fascinating aspect of American culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cForever\u201d foods can be re-plenished time and again \u2013 think of sourdough starter. In Chinese culture there is an \u201ceverlasting\u201d broth. Tik Tokker Annie Rauwerder took the concept to create a perpetual stew in 2023 and became an internet sensation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/w3ct5xn8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The BBC<\/a> interviewed a microbiologist about the safety of this type of food along with <strong>Martha Carlin (History)<\/strong> about its history.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do political yards signs make a difference in elections? <strong>Kennan Ferguson (Political Science) <\/strong>weighed in on <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/wi\/milwaukee\/news\/2024\/09\/03\/wisconsin-yard-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spectrum 1 News,<\/a> and spoke <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/wi\/milwaukee\/news\/2024\/09\/05\/wisconsin-candidates-political-outsiders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on the channel again<\/a> regarding candidates\u2019 need for a political record. He also spoke on how local elections are often overlooked in favor of national elections in the <a href=\"https:\/\/racinecountyeye.com\/2024\/09\/04\/racine-voter-local-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Racine County Eye<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alumnus <strong>Michael Allen (\u201894, BA Psychology) <\/strong>was featured on <a href=\"https:\/\/radiomilwaukee.org\/food-drink\/2024-08-29\/beerline-cafe-milwaukee-riverwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Radio Milwaukee<\/a> as the owner and founder of Milwaukee\u2019s Beerline Cafe, a restaurant featuring vegetarian and vegan cuisine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letters &amp; Science staff members <strong>Aimee Orndorf (Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies) and Christine Wolf (Global Studies)<\/strong>, along with Ben Trager from 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Student Experience and Talent were presenters at the fall conference of the Center for Research on College-Workforce Transitions held in October at UW-Madison. The 2024 theme was \u201cAmplifying Student Voices: Advancing Career Wellness &amp; Success,\u201d and their presentation title was &#8220;Designing a Global Careers Event: Leveraging Collaboration to Foster Student Career Readiness.&#8221; They described the impact of intra-campus collaborations for a campus-wide multifaceted event that included skill-building stations, a mini study abroad fair, a facilitated panel, and networking.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Planetarium\u2019s<\/strong> annual event \u2013 Campfires, Constellations &amp; S\u2019mores &#8211; was featured in both the <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherdexpress.com\/lgbtq\/dear-ruthie\/gimme-smore-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Shepherd Express<\/em><\/a> and on Milwaukee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/campfires-constellations-smores-uwm-planetarium-hosting-its-annual-event-tuesday-evening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS Channel 58<\/a>.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Liam Callanan (English) <\/strong>was part of the lineup at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/doorcountypulse.com\/washington-island-lit-fest-has-come-this-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Island Literary Festival<\/a> in Door County in September. The annual three-day workshop allows attendees to meet authors, attend classes, and engage in workshops.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate <strong>Liliana Fannin (Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies) <\/strong>shared her experience as an intern with CNN during both the Republican and Democratic national conventions this summer.
