The clinic promises patients trauma-informed care and treats a range of mental health conditions. Laurin provides individual therapy and psychological testing. Her particular area of interest focuses on cognitive changes due to age or injury.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Telzrow (\u201896, MA History) <\/strong>was named the new executive director of the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society in Door County, Wisconsin. Telzrow, now responsible for helping to preserve the city\u2019s historical architectural structures and bringing programming and exhibits to showcase the city\u2019s history, was most recently the executive director of the Heritage Hill State Historical Park in Green Bay.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Martin Christiansen (\u201803 BA; \u201805 MA History) <\/strong>was named the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwbl.com\/2024\/05\/21\/martin-christiansen-selected-as-superintendent-of-george-rogers-clark-national-historical-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new superintendent<\/a> of George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes, Indiana. The 24-acre park houses a monument to American Revolution general George Rogers Clark and sits upon what is believed to be the site of the former Fort Sackville. Christiansen is currently a supervisory training specialist and program manager for the National Park Service\u2019s Fundamentals Program in the Office of Learning and Development located at the Horace Albright Training Center in Grand Canyon National Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gale Klappa (\u201872, BA Mass Communications) <\/strong>has retired from day-to-day leadership of the WEC Energy Group after a noteworthy 40-year career in the industry. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/milwaukee\/news\/2024\/05\/24\/gale-klappa-exit-interview-wec-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Business Journal<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>published an \u201cexit interview\u201d with Klappa, who reflected on his years as a leader in Milwaukee\u2019s business community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels &amp; Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Riforgiate (Communication)<\/strong> was honored with the 2024 Warren Mentorship Award. The award, given by the Central States Communication Association at their convention in early April, recognizes a mid-career scholar who excels in all aspects of their career (teaching, research\/creativity, service, and engagement), but most importantly, is an excellent mentor to students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Uk Heo (Political Science)<\/strong> and <strong>Sooho Song (Ancient and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures)<\/strong> received a $213,316 research grant, along with colleagues from two other institutions, for their project, \u201cSouth Korea\u2019s Rise at the Intersection of Globalization and Deglobalization.\u201d With this grant, they will write books and host conferences for the years 2024-2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kate Beutner\u2019s (English)<\/strong> recent novel, <em>Killingly<\/em> (Soho, 2023) was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fartlitlab.org%2Fevents%2Fwisconsin-writers-awards-reading-and-celebration-2024&amp;data=05%7C02%7Csvickery%40uwm.edu%7C62ccf581ca12444b2b1208dc6b044c45%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C638502913455348078%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Kv7LbgcPie2%2BJJryBX5dj8kZwIRjCtuEKWdwzg%2Bo1yQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edna Ferber Fiction Book Prize from the Wisconsin Writers Awards<\/a>. Published by Wayne State UP, the anthology highlights the varied perspectives of individuals who have lived with infertility.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/strong>, Milwaukee\u2019s local National Public Radio affiliate station that operates under the umbrella of the College of Letters &amp; Science, won 16 awards this season at two separate, prestigious local and state press and broadcaster association galas. On May 3, W51ÁÔÆæ won six awards at the Milwaukee Press Club Annual Gridiron Dinner, including two Golds, one Silver, and three Bronze awards. Then, on May 4 at the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Annual Gala, the station won 10 awards, including six First place awards, three Second place awards, and one Third place award. In addition to the five awards won at the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Awards earlier this year, this brings W51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s total award count up to 21 awards for their coverage of the community in 2023. Sultana\u2019s internship activities include those in direct support of her dissertation aimed at elucidating the mechanism(s) of uranium mobility in groundwater from field experimental data. Her specific activities include: 1) exploratory groundwater flow modeling, 2) exploratory solute transport modeling, 3) inverse flow modeling, and 4) inverse transport modeling. The former two activities resulting in the delivery of a general and open-source flow and transport model to be used as an educational tool in academia and as a resource for researchers and practitioners in a professional work environment. The latter two activities will result in the delivery of a uranium-specific and calibrated flow and transport model to elucidate the mechanism(s) that control the fate and transport of uranium during flooding events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These activities will be conducted at the United States Geological Survey&#8217;s Upper Midwest Water Science Center in Madison, Wisconsin, and under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Fienen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Schwartz (Geography) <\/strong>was declared among the top .05% of scholars worldwide by ScholarGPS on the basis of his prolific publication record, the outsized impact of his work and research, and the outstanding quality of his scholarly contributions. ScholarGPS uses analytics to derive quantitative rankings for research institutions, universities, and academic programs across all areas of scholarly endeavor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduates <strong>Jamie Kollman <\/strong>and <strong>Reece Charles (both Conservation &amp; Environmental Science) <\/strong>were among 10 students from across the state chosen to participate in the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconservation.org\/welcoming-the-2024-diversity-in-conservation-internship-cohort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diversity in Conservation Internship Program.<\/a> The program is meant to introduce students to career pathways in conservation by having them partner with environmental organizations within Wisconsin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Heywood (Economics) <\/strong>told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/federal-rule-banning-noncompete-agreements-could-give-wisconsinites-more-job-mobility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Public Radio<\/a> that non-compete clauses can be used to depress worker wages in a piece that explored the effects of the FTC\u2019s new ban on non-competes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trees may get all the attention, but shrubs are an important factor in mitigating climate change, <strong>Alison Donnelly (Geography) <\/strong>said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/environment\/2024-05-01\/uwm-scientist-calls-shrubs-small-but-mighty-contributors-to-climate-mitigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate student <strong>JoAnne Potter (Philosophy) <\/strong>was profiled on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/2024-05-06\/this-uwm-student-went-back-to-college-in-her-70s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/a> ahead of her graduation. Potter is 72 years old and one of the oldest individuals to graduate from 51ÁÔÆæ via the Honors College.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent excavation of the remains of an Iron Age building in the Iberian Peninsula reveals valuable information about the daily lives of the people who used to live there, <strong>Bettina Arnold (Anthropology) <\/strong>told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/20\/world\/iron-age-fire-spain-earring-hannibal-scn\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor Jeffrey Sommers along with emeritus professor Patrick Bellegarde-Smith<\/strong> (both African &amp; African Diaspora Studies) co-authored an article published on <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2024\/04\/haiti-disorder-poverty-us-intervention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacobin.com<\/a> regarding the political situation in Haiti.
