The Comptroller serves as the city\u2019s chief financial officer and audits the city\u2019s finances, in addition to serving as a watchdog for city spending. Christianson served as the deputy comptroller under the previous comptroller, who decided not to seek reelection.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roy Dietsch (\u201808, BA Economics) <\/strong>was named the Entrepreneurship Winner at BizTimes Media\u2019s Innovation + Entrepreneurship Forum in late 2023. Dietsch is the founder and CEO of PartsBadger, a custom machining company that serves southeastern Wisconsin. During his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qDkrirt1Y9U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acceptance speech<\/a>, Dietsch thanked educators who supported his journey, including <strong>Avik Chakrabarti (Economics)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Megan O\u2019Halloran (\u201802, BA Spanish) <\/strong>was appointed the executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/biztimes.com\/franciscan-peacemakers-names-new-executive-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Franciscan Peacemakers<\/a>, a Milwaukee-based program to assist women escaping prostitution, addiction, and homelessness. O\u2019Halloran was previously the director of development and communications at Walker\u2019s Point Youth &amp; Family Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Janine Kwapis (\u201813, PhD Psychology) <\/strong>received the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.psu.edu\/news\/kwapis-new-investigator-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Investigator Award in Aging and Biology and Geroscience Research<\/a> from the American Federation for Aging Research. The award confers a three-year, $375,000 grant to support Kwapis\u2019 research which explores how dysregulation of an enzyme called histone deacetylase HDAC3 impacts how memories are updated. Kwapis is the Paul Berg Early Career Professor in the Biological Sciences at Penn State.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels &amp; Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brenda C<\/strong><strong>\u00e1<\/strong><strong>rdenas\u2019 (English) <\/strong>book <em>Trace <\/em>(Red Hen Press, 2023) won the <a href=\"https:\/\/midlandauthors.org\/2024\/04\/announcing-the-midland-authors-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Society of Midland Authors 2023 Poetry Book Award<\/a> honoring the Society\u2019s choices for the best books by Midwest authors published in 2023. <em>Trace <\/em>is also a finalist for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forewordreviews.com\/awards\/finalists\/2023\/poetry-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foreword Review\u2019s Indie Poetry Prize<\/a> for books that present work that uses language for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or instead of, its apparent communication value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Riforgiate (Communication) <\/strong>was recently honored with the 2024 Warren Mentorship Award. The award, given by the Central States Communication Association at their convention in early April, recognizes a mid-career scholar who excels in all aspects of their career (teaching, research\/creativity, service, and engagement), but most importantly is an excellent mentor to students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The solar eclipse captured the entire country\u2019s gaze on April 8. The <strong>51ÁÔÆæ Planetarium <\/strong>hosted a viewing party to help an audience of thousands safely watch as the moon passed between the Earth and the sun, obscuring its light. Several area news outlets, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/milwaukee-near-total-eclipse-draws-thousands-to-look-up\/60434131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISN 12 News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/environment\/2024-04-09\/milwaukeeans-fill-uwm-plaza-to-savor-solar-eclipse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/once-in-a-lifetime-experience-all-eyes-to-the-skies-to-see-the-2024-solar-eclipse-in-se-wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS 58 News<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2024\/04\/08\/milwaukeeans-watch-the-partial-solar-eclipse-at-public-museum-uwm\/73246359007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a> covered the event. The <em>Journal Sentinel <\/em>even created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/local\/milwaukee\/2024\/04\/08\/a-total-solar-eclipse-will-darken-the-milwaukee-skies-on-monday\/73248105007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo gallery<\/a> of pictures from the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the eclipse, <strong>Jean Creighton (Planetarium) <\/strong>was much in demand to explain the science of the event. She described how to safely view April 8\u2019s solar eclipse in an article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/milwaukeerecord.com\/city-life\/where-and-how-to-safely-view-the-solar-eclipse-on-april-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Record<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>spoke about when Wisconsin will next be in the path of totality of a solar eclipse in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2024\/04\/05\/when-are-the-next-total-solar-eclipses-in-the-us-and-wisconsin-after-2024\/73206201007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a>, and talked about the science of the eclipse with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/this-does-not-happen-every-day-milwaukeeans-prepare-for-partial-solar-eclipse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS 58 News.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purchasing car insurance can be confusing and frustrating, so <strong>Rachael Jurek (Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Gumz had an enormous impact on the social welfare of the cities of Milwaukee and Chicago. From 1964-86, he was a social worker with multiple social service organizations in Milwaukee, and the Children\u2019s Service Society in particular.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After earning his PhD, Gumz joined the Department of Social Work as a faculty member at the University of Oshkosh, and later joined the faculty in the School of Social Work at Loyola University in Chicago. He retired in 2015.
