He takes over on May 1 and will oversee the strategic direction of the School while fostering partnerships with industry leaders and enhancing and expanding opportunities for students. Niederjohn is currently the founding director of the Concordia Free Enterprise Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audrey Posten (\u201813, BA History and Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies) <\/strong>is the new co-editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttenbergpress.com\/articles\/2025\/04\/23\/posten-van-kooten-take-over-editorial-duties-press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Guttenberg Press<\/em><\/a>, a weekly newspaper covering municipalities in Clayton County, Iowa. Posten currently works for the <em>Times-Register, <\/em>which is owned by the same parent company that owns <em>The Guttenberg Press<\/em>. Posten has been with her current paper since 2013 and will continue to cover local news in her new position.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laurels-amp-accolades-nbsp\"><strong>Laurels &amp; Accolades<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Kennan Ferguson (Political Science) <\/strong>was selected as a Distinguished Scholar Fulbright for Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic, to be taken in the spring of 2026.&nbsp; Ferguson is the first faculty member from 51ÁÔÆæ to be named as a Distinguished Scholar. The awards \u201care viewed as the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program,\u201d according to Fulbright.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Jeffrey Sommers (African &amp; African Diaspora Studies and Global Studies)<\/strong> will spend three months this summer at Babes-Bolyai University (Romania) on a U.S. State Department Fulbright award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Daniel Agterberg (Physics)<\/strong> has been awarded funding from the Simons Foundation to participate in the Simons Collaboration on New Frontiers in Superconductivity. Agterberg\u2019s research focuses on correlated quantum materials with an emphasis on superconductivity and magnetism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor<strong> Chia Youyee Vang (History)<\/strong>, who is also the 51ÁÔÆæ Vice Chancellor for Community Empowerment and Institutional Inclusivity, is included in a new book of <a href=\"https:\/\/isthmus.com\/arts\/books\/wisconsin-idols-commemorates-the-known-and-the-lesser-known\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Wisconsin Idols: 100 Heroes who Changed the State, the World, and Me<\/em><\/a> by Dean Robbins. The book highlights influential Wisconsinites throughout history. Vang is the final entry included in the work. The book was published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty and students from the <strong>Department of Communication<\/strong> presented their research at the Central States Communication Association Convention in April. Undergraduate students <strong>Justin Gottfredsen<\/strong> and <strong>Evelyn Rojas<\/strong> were selected to present their research. Several 51ÁÔÆæ attendees are receiving awards for research, including graduate students <strong>Alima Abdul-Karimu, Emmanuel Appiah, Alexandra Parr Balaram, Cassandra D. Hightower, Ousman Mbaye, Candice Ruh, Xiola Schneiderman,<\/strong> and <strong>Sarra Ben Slama<\/strong>, as well as Associate Professor <strong>Xiaoxia Cao<\/strong>, teaching faculty <strong>Kim Marie Omachinski<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Sarah E. Riforgiate<\/strong>, and Associate Professor <strong>Erin Ruppel<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three undergraduate students in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s <strong>Chinese <\/strong>program received top awards at the 2025 Midwest College Chinese Speech Contest, hosted by North Central College in April. Awardees include <strong>Genevieve Dwyer <\/strong>(1st Place, Third-Year Non-Heritage Category); <strong>Hidayah Osman <\/strong>(2nd Place, Fourth-Year Heritage Category); and <strong>Celinia He<\/strong> (3rd Place, Third-Year Heritage Category). All three students were mentored by teaching faculty <strong>Lu Yin (Ancient &amp; Modern Languages, Literatures, &amp; Cultures)<\/strong>. The students competed among approximately 60 students from eight colleges across the Midwest. Contestants were judged on a three-minute Chinese speech and a three-minute performance related to Chinese culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-media-and-around-the-community-nbsp\"><strong>In the Media and around the Community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/binghamton\/news\/2025\/04\/02\/wisconsin-supreme-court-trump-musk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spectrum News<\/a> asked Distinguished Professor <strong>Kathleen Dolan (Political Science) <\/strong>her opinion on what Judge Susan Crawford\u2019s win of Wisconsin\u2019s State Supreme Court race meant about prevailing attitudes towards national politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate professor <strong>Sara Benesh (Political Science) <\/strong>spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/liberal-judge-defeats-musk-backed-candidate-in-wisconsin-supreme-court-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courthouse News<\/a> about the harms that could follow if state supreme courts are viewed as partisans entities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the publication of his 13th book of poetry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/uw-milwaukee-philosopher-paradoxes-life-new-poetry-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Public Radio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/john-koethes-new-poetry-anthology-dives-into-the-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Magazine<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>featured Distinguished Professor emeritus <strong>John Koethe (Philosophy) <\/strong>to talk about his work. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailynous.com\/2025\/04\/10\/acts-of-professional-kindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DailyNous.com<\/a> also published an entry that featured a selection of Koethe\u2019s work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milwaukee has been in the national media spotlight a lot lately, thanks to the State Supreme Court race. Assistant Professor <strong>Michael Mirer (Communication) <\/strong>spoke about the lasting effects on the state\u2019s image on Spectrum News.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irna Phillips is hailed as the creator of the soap opera genre.
