Lobello originally hails from Wisconsin and was previously the director of regional history and genealogy at the Pikes Peak, Colorado Library District. He will oversee the 100-year-old Museum and says he will concentrate on telling the stories of Sheboygan County\u2019s residents and communities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Darryl Johnson (\u201894, BA Political Science and Sociology) <\/strong>was featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherdexpress.com\/news\/central-city-stories\/darryl-johnson-riverworks-development-corporation%E2%80%99s-executiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shepherd Express<\/a> for his role as the executive director of the Riverworks Development Corporation, a nonprofit that develops real estate projects and reinvests revenue to improve the lives of residents in the Riverwest and Harambee neighborhoods in Milwaukee. Johnson spoke about his career, the organization, and how to give back to their neighborhood.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nyesha Stone (\u201818, BA Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies)<\/strong> discussed how her media company, Carvd N Stone, is on its way to expanding nationally during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/uwm-grads-local-media-company-branching-out-nationally\/46753784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISN 12 News<\/a> segment. Carvd N Stone focuses on positive news and also offers student scholarships and marketing services.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels and Accolades <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate student <strong>Hassan Richardson (Conservation &amp; Environmental Science)<\/strong> received a <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/wi\/madison\/news\/2024\/02\/16\/african-american-environmental-pioneer-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rising Star Award<\/a> from Nearby Nature Milwaukee as part of their African American Environmental Pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/environment\/2024-02-20\/milwaukee-celebrates-5th-annual-african-american-environmental-pioneers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">awards program<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Erin Ruppel (Communication)<\/strong> received a $50,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute&#8217;s Pioneer Collaborative Curricula Program to co-develop with a faculty member at Marquette University a 2-course sequence on the art of &#8220;speaking data&#8221;. The courses are intended to help students master the nuances of data interpretation, navigate all stages of transforming raw data into actionable insights, and adeptly communicate these insights to diverse audiences and stakeholders.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brenda C\u00e1rdenas\u2019 (English)<\/strong> poem \u201cPara los tin-tun-teros&#8221; was scored by choral composer Dr. Daniel Afonso (California State University, Stanislaus). The collaborative score with poem was published in 2023 by Hal Leonard Music and will be performed at Carnegie Hall on March 12, 2024, by the National Concert Chorus with seven other new choral compositions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aki Roberts (Sociology) <\/strong>spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/guides\/insurance-services\/car-theft-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MarketWatch<\/a> about national trends in motor vehicle thefts. Roberts spoke about the factors that contribute to car theft: proximity to offenders, an attractive target, and lack of guardianship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/2024-02-05\/uwms-manfred-olson-planetarium-hosts-program-to-celebrate-the-lunar-new-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/a> highlighted the <strong>51ÁÔÆæ Planetarium\u2019s <\/strong>plans to celebrate the Lunar New Year, with interviews from Planetarium director <strong>Jean Creighton <\/strong>and student worker <strong>Jordan LaScala (Physics)<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/marquettewire.org\/4115705\/ae\/lunar-new-year-year-of-the-dragon-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marquette University\u2019s <em>Wire<\/em><\/a> also covered the Planetarium\u2019s Lunar New Year events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/madame-web-bad-reviews-140051132.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarysue.com\/so-bad-its-good-madame-web-is-peak-trash-cinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Mary Sue<\/a> tapped <strong>Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece&#8217;s (Film Studies) <\/strong>expertise in \u201ctrash movies\u201d and talked to her about the poorly-rated film \u201cMadame Web.\u201d She was also interviewed on Wisconsin Public Radio for a story on movie theater organs and led the book discussion at the Wauksesha Public Library for \u201cMy Heart is a Chainsaw\u201d on Valentine\u2019s Day. The bestselling book by Stephen\u2019 Graham Jones features a main character with an encyclopedic knowledge of horror films whose town becomes the scene of a series of horror-film-like murders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milwaukee seems to have mixed feelings about the show \u201cHappy Days.\u201d <strong>Elana Levine <\/strong>and <strong>Michael Newman (both English) <\/strong>spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/happy-days-in-milwaukee-what-the-classic-70s-sitcom-had-to-say-about-cream-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Magazine<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>about what the show did \u2013 and didn\u2019t \u2013&nbsp; get right about the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of trying to lure tourists during the Republican National Convention this summer, <strong>Scott Drewianka (Economics) <\/strong>recommended that suburbs think long-term and use the convention to attract new business opportunities in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/south-milwaukee-pitches-rnc-visitors-on-past-presidential-ties-will-it-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS 58 News<\/a> report.
