Liebert (\u201923, Masters of Public Administration) <\/strong>was named one of Wisconsin\u2019s 51 Most Influential Black Leaders of 2023 by Madison365.com. Liebert is the Wisconsin State Director for the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization All Voting is Local, which seeks to dismantle barriers to the ballot box. Liebert has also served on the Janesville City Council and in administrative roles in other municipalities, and worked as the White House Liaison to the Department of Agriculture during the Obama administration.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brice D. Smith (\u201904, MA English; \u201910, PhD History) <\/strong>received a $149,969 grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2024\/01\/10\/project-exploring-contributions-of-black-lgbtq-milwaukee-win-grant\/72181738007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> for his work on the \u201cHouse of History Project: Black LGBTQ+ Survivors and Thrivers in Milwaukee.\u201d The project records oral histories about Black members of the city\u2019s LGBTQ+ community and includes discussions about the HIV\/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics. The grant was awarded through Diverse And Resilient, a local LGBTQ+ advocacy group. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2024\/u-s-rep-moore-announces-neh-grants-to-fund-efforts-to-uplift-important-milwaukee-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congresswoman Gwen Moore<\/a> lauded Smith\u2019s efforts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gour Gobinda Goswami (\u201803, PhD Economics)<\/strong> was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/campus\/noticeboard\/news\/uttara-university-welcomes-distinguished-academic-leader-prof-dr-gour-gobinda-goswami-new-pro-vice-3521746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uttara University<\/a> in Bangladesh in January by the president of Bangladesh and the Vice Chancellor at Uttara University. Most recently, Goswami was a faculty member at Bangladesh\u2019s North South University. Goswami brings more than 30 years of teaching and research experience to his new role.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Timothy Jarome (\u201913, PhD Psychology)<\/strong> received Virginia\u2019s highest honor for a faculty member across their public university system \u2013 a 2024 Outstanding Faculty Awards from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vt.edu\/articles\/2024\/01\/cals-jarome-SCHEV-award.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Jarome<\/a> is a neuroscientist at Virginia Tech\u2019s School of Animal Science where his internationally recognized research program explores the molecular mechanisms in the brain related to fear-based memory formation such as PTSD.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ghassan Zeineddine\u2019s (\u201816, PhD English) <\/strong>book, <em>Dearborn<\/em>, was designated among \u201c5 Wisconsin Books to Read this Winter\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/5-wisconsin-books-to-read-this-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Magazine<\/a>. The book is a collection of short stories exploring the lives of the Arab American community in Dearborn, Michigan, where over half of the population is Middle Eastern. This is Zeineddine\u2019s debut work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Several Letters &amp; Science alumni were named among the Milwaukee Business Journal\u2019s list of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/milwaukee\/news\/2024\/01\/24\/see-full-list-of-100-milwaukee-area-power-brokers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top 100 Power Brokers in Milwaukee<\/a>\u201d for 2024. They include <strong>Wendy Baumann (\u201984 BA Clinical Psychology<\/strong>, \u201994 MS Exceptional Education), Wisconsin Women\u2019s Business Initiative Corp; <strong>Emily Phillips (\u201907 BA History and Sociology)<\/strong>, Robert W. Baird &amp; Co; <strong>Marcelia Nicholson (\u201914 BA Communication)<\/strong>, Milwaukee County Board; <strong>Clifton Phelps (\u201907 MPA Public Administration)<\/strong>, JCP Construction; and <strong>Gale Klappa (\u201972 BA Communication)<\/strong>, Wisconsin Energy Group. He provided commentary on Russian propaganda efforts based on his 35-year career as a foreign service officer in Bangkok, Moscow, Lusaka, Belgrade, and Bucharest.&nbsp; Katzka is now retired from his service.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jen Gerber (\u201803 BA History)<\/strong> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmtoday.com\/news_graphic\/news\/cedarburg-art-museum-welcomes-new-executive-director\/article_cb113445-2397-5be9-a86b-babb8edf74c4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new executive director<\/a> of the Cedarburg Art Museum effective January 2024. Her previous experience includes library administration for Ozaukee County, and she teaches online nonprofit management courses for the University of Alabama.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels and Accolades <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Derek Handley (English) <\/strong>and <strong>Anne Bonds (Geography) <\/strong>were awarded a $147,412 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for their project \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/mapping-the-echoes-of-racially-restrictive-property-deed-covenants-in-milwaukee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mapping Racism and Resistance in Milwaukee County (MRR-MKE)<\/a>.\u201d MRR-MKE looks at the history of racially restrictive housing covenants in metro Milwaukee. Their efforts received praise from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2024\/u-s-rep-moore-announces-neh-grants-to-fund-efforts-to-uplift-important-milwaukee-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congresswoman Gwen Moore<\/a>, who represents Wisconsin\u2019s 4th district which includes Milwaukee, and was acknowledged in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2024\/01\/10\/project-exploring-contributions-of-black-lgbtq-milwaukee-win-grant\/72181738007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2024\/01\/25\/geographer-studies-housing-covenants-to-map-racial-discrimination-in-milwaukee-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Examiner<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PhD student <strong>Danielle Harms (English) <\/strong>was named the director of letters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibmadison.com\/wisconsin-academy-of-sciences-arts-letters-announces-director-of-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences<\/a>, Arts &amp; Letters. Her responsibilities include serving as editor of the academy\u2019s signature publication, <em>Wisconsin People &amp; Ideas<\/em> (WP&amp;I) magazine, leading the WP&amp;I Poetry &amp; Fiction Contest, and finding new ways to drive engagement in Wisconsin\u2019s literary community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jeffrey Sommers<\/strong> (African and African Diaspora Studies) wrote an op-ed for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/opinion\/2023\/12\/11\/wisconsin-supreme-court-anti-union-law-act-10-republicans\/71828498007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/a> on Wisconsin\u2019s Act 10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bettina Arnold <\/strong>(Anthropology) was quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-00101-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature<\/a> following the discovery of the first known cases of chromosomal disorders in ancient DNA from human bones. The discovery&nbsp; sheds light on the perception and treatment of disabled individuals in ancient society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/projects\/watermarks-milwaukee-mary-miss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Metropolis Magazine<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>highlighted the work of <strong>Ryan Holifield (Geography) <\/strong>in starting the WaterMarks Initiative, which seeks to educate city residents about clean water stewardship through the use of lighted signs, art, and science outreach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing marijuana legalization even marginally may open new doors for academic research on the effects of cannabis, <strong>Krista Lisdahl (Psychology) <\/strong>told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox6now.com\/news\/wisconsin-republicans-medical-marijuana-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox 6 News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Derek Handley (English) <\/strong>spoke at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmtoday.com\/the_freeman\/news\/waukesha-library-to-hold-events-to-celebrate-martin-luther-king-jr\/article_99b56717-ed64-544e-a4d0-b4a7cd7fe842.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waukesha Public Library<\/a> in January at an event titled, \u201cMapping Racism and Resistance: Struggles over Racism and Real Estate in the Urban North<em>.<\/em>\u201d Handley spoke about the Mapping Racism and Resistance research project he is undertaking with 51ÁÔÆæ geography professor Anne Bonds. Blueprint365 profiled the company and its founder, <strong>Nyesha Stone (\u201918, BA Journalism, Advertising, &amp; Media Studies)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deep polarization in America has bolstered support for Donald Trump\u2019s candidacy for the Republic nomination for president, <strong>Kathleen Dolan (Political Science) <\/strong>told <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2024\/01\/09\/trump-legal-problems-abound-as-first-test-of-2024-presidential-campaign-nears-in-iowa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Examiner<\/a> in an article examining the former president\u2019s legal troubles.
