The company covers topics ranging from threats and harassment of local government officials to diversity in local representation to differences in the urban\/rural divide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe Blaszcynski (\u201823, MA Political Science) <\/strong>was appointed the Wisconsin Data Director at the Repulican National Committee. This is an important role with the RNC, as the presidential election approaches and Wisconsin is once again poised as a swing state.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bryce Stevenson (\u201815, BA English) <\/strong>was named one of Wisconsin\u2019s \u201c32 Most Influential Native American Leaders for 2024\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/madison365.com\/wisconsins-32-most-influential-native-american-leaders-for-2024-part-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madison 365<\/a>. Stevenson is a chef and the owner of Miijim, a restaurant in LaPointe, Wisconsin, which serves indigenous cuisine using traditional ingredients like bison, venison, wild rice, and mushrooms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jacqueline Schram (\u201892, BA; \u201895, MS Anthropology) <\/strong>was named was named one of Wisconsin\u2019s \u201c32 Most Influential Native American Leaders for 2024\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/madison365.com\/wisconsins-32-most-influential-native-american-leaders-for-2024-part-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madison 365<\/a>. Schram is the director of public affairs and special assistant for Native American affairs at Marquette University and also works in the university\u2019s Indigeneity Lab.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beckett Callan (\u201824, BA Journalism, Advertising &amp; Media Studies) <\/strong>has joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmtoday.com\/the_freeman\/sports\/callan-new-assistant-sports-editor-at-freeman\/article_f6e8c920-e146-11ee-9d52-db4062d0e2b0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Waukesha Freeman<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>as a sports reporter, where he will cover local high school and college sports. Though Callan has freelanced in sports reporting, this is his first full-time reporting job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Robert Hanson (\u201810, BA Geography) <\/strong>is the new community development director of the village of <a href=\"https:\/\/kenoshanews.com\/news\/local\/robert-hanson-to-take-up-pleasant-prairie-community-development-director-role\/article_6feba51c-d8dd-11ee-a8e9-9f4b03cb4aff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plesant Prairie, Wisconsin<\/a>. He was hired in February and will be responsible for shepherding new projects to enhance the village\u2019s profile. Hanson was most recently the economic development coordinator for the city of Minnetonka, Minnesota.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Soren Gajewski (\u201898, BA Psychology) <\/strong>was hired as the Racine Unified School District\u2019s new superintendent. <a href=\"https:\/\/racinecountyeye.com\/2024\/03\/21\/racine-unified-soren-gajewski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The district announced<\/a> it had begun contract negotiations with Gajewski, who has worked within the district for the last 17 years. He is currently the interim superintendent, after having served as a teacher, principal, and deputy chief of schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurels &amp; Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anne Basting (English) <\/strong>was honored with a 2024 Fellows Award by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisbusiness.com\/2024\/wisconsin-academy-of-sciences-arts-and-letters-2024-fellows-awarded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters<\/a>. The award, given to just 16 Wisconsinites each year, is granted to individuals highly accomplished in their fields who have demonstrated life-long commitment to intellectual discourse and public service. Basting was chosen for her dedication in introducing creative pursuits to benefit the aging and elderly. Basting will be recognized at a ceremony in September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Media and Around the Community&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican candidate for senate Eric Hovde may have a \u201cvisibility\u201d problem, <strong>Kathleen Dolan (Political Science) <\/strong>told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/wisconsin-gop-candidate-eric-hovde-says-hes-a-uniterbut-donates-to-the-maga-extreme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Beast<\/a> in an article about the Wisconsin Senate race. She also spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/2024\/3\/13\/24098780\/politics-gender-divide-generation-z-youth-men-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vox<\/a> about the gender divide \u2013 or lack thereof \u2013 in voting trends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retired ambassador <strong>Luis Arreaga (\u201881, PhD Economics) <\/strong>met with politics and government students at <a href=\"https:\/\/news.illinoisstate.edu\/2024\/02\/retired-u-s-ambassador-luis-arreaga-visits-with-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois State University<\/a> in February. Arreaga has served as the ambassador to Iceland (2010-13) and Guatemala (2017-20) and in other government positions throughout his long career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year is a Leap Year. <strong>Jean Creighton (Planetarium) <\/strong>explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/2024-02-29\/leap-day-in-milwaukee-rare-birthdays-cosmic-love-stories-and-unforgettable-proposals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W51ÁÔÆæ Radio<\/a> why every four years, the month of February has 29 days. She also described what makes the \u201cdevil comet\u201d so special to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2024\/03\/19\/how-to-view-rare-devil-comet-from-milwaukee-in-march-april-2024\/73016895007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>ahead of the comet\u2019s appearance in the night sky during March and April.
