Margarita Garcia-Rojas, LACUSL major, participated in undergraduate research with historian, Dr. Rachel Buff. Margarita is currently featured in the 51 Report for her outstanding work helping document deportations, as part of the Documenting Deportation Database, and recording oral histories to understand living under outdated immigration policy. Margarita has previously presented her research at the 51 Undergraduate Research Symposium in April. Nancy Bird-Soto, LACUSL Affiliated Faculty, past LACUSL Committee Co-Chair, and Associate Professor of Latin American Literature in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, has published the book Dissident Spirits: The Post-Insular Imprint in Puerto Rican/Diasporic Literature (Peter Lang, 2018). As well, she published the article: “ in Polifonía vol. 8 (2018). At the MMLA in Kansas City, she presented the paper “La ciudad que (no) se repite en Simone de Eduardo Lalo” (November 2018). Prof. Bird-Soto continues to be an invited columnist for . She now chairs the UW Spanish Placement Exam Committee.

Gladys Mitchell-Walthour, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Political Economy in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, became the Brazil Studies Association President on July 28, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro. BRASA is an international, interdisciplinary organization of scholars who focus on Brazilian studies. Gladys is the first African-American woman to lead the organization. This is a wonderful recognition and congratulations, Gladys!

Andrew Roznowski (pictured right), a May 2018 graduate of the Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latin@ Studies (LACUSL) Major and an Africology Minor, is included on the 51 homepage under the “Your 51 Experience” feature of students “Hired Before Graduation.” Andrew works as the director of operations for Nigerian boutique Usman La’Aro, owned by close friend and 51 alum Simbiat Abisola Laaro (pictured left). All of the clothing sold at the Brady Street shop is designed by Laaro and tailored in Nigeria. Roznowski says his job has taken him to Nigeria multiple times.
