This gathering in the SDHS library the morning of November 11 offered them an opportunity to deepen that conversation and consider how different experiences of migration shape people&#8217;s families and emotional lives, and how art can help express some of those experiences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11579\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11579\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Scene in a school library, with students seated at tables in front of a video screen showing two men on a video call\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-1.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Division students speak with the film directors, from Milwaukee to Mexico state.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The program was centered around the innovative animated documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsin-uwm.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01UWI_ML\/13nukll\/alma991014518478802124\"><em>Home is Somewhere Else<\/em> (2023)<\/a>, which presents three stories from Mexican-American youth about their migration experiences in their own words. The film then pairs those firsthand testimonies with rich animated visuals, each story with its own artistic style.<\/p>\n<p>At South Division, students watched the segment &#8220;A Tale of Two Sisters&#8221; \u2013 about sisters whose differing documentation status affect their career goals in different ways. After briefly reflecting on the obstacles and resilience in their stories, students then had the opportunity to speak with Mexican directors and animators Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos, on topics ranging from their creative process to their motivation for sharing these stories.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11580\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11580\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Close up photo of art supplies and two papers: one showing a still frame from the documentary, another showing a student's drawing of landscape and people in Thailand\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/11\/2025-11-SDHS-doc-2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students drew on the documentary&#8217;s content and style to create their own visual reflections on home<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As one student commented, &#8220;this story really opened my eyes to this experience [of migration]&#8221;; others shared that the segment reminded them of their own families, with different generations living across countries and languages.<\/p>\n<p>After learning more about the steps involved in gathering and representing these stories, students had the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences of home through visual art.
