  {"id":11231,"date":"2025-07-30T16:47:03","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T21:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/?p=11231"},"modified":"2026-03-30T14:30:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T19:30:05","slug":"2025-summer-teacher-institute-reflections-and-resources-on-childhood-and-youth-in-latin-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/2025-summer-teacher-institute-reflections-and-resources-on-childhood-and-youth-in-latin-america\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 Summer Teacher Institute: Reflections and Resources on Childhood and Youth in Latin America"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This July 7-9, 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies welcomed 25 K-16 educators to campus for our annual Summer Teacher Institute, supported in part by a National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education and in partnership with sister centers at UW-Madison and Florida International University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-velez-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"presentation in classroom\" class=\"wp-image-11241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-velez-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-velez.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption><em>Professor Velez shares his research on Colombia&#8217;s educational system and national peace curriculum<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Representing the full range of grade levels and many disciplines, educators from across Wisconsin and eight other states quickly jumped into collaborations, taking in expert presentations and buzzing in small group discussion on this year\u2019s topic of <strong>Childhood and Youth in Latin America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On day one, participants learned from <strong>Prof. Gabriel Velez<\/strong> (Marquette University, Educational Policy and Leadership) about how Colombian youth are affected by the country\u2019s long history of violence. Dr. Velez shared how internal displacement has affected school systems, and discussed the 2015 implementation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peace-ed-campaign.org\/mapping-peace-education-in-colombia-a-comprehensive-report\/\">nationwide peace curriculum<\/a>. Participants were quick to draw connections on incorporating these Colombian examples in their classrooms, including units on civics, <em>Macbeth<\/em>, and petroleum\u2019s role in the drug trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group rounded out the day with a visit to 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/claspprograms.org\/americas-award\/teaching-resources\/\">Am\u00e9ricas Award<\/a> Research Collection, introduced by cofounder <strong>Julie Kline<\/strong> (UW-Milwaukee academic staff emerita): <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.uwm.edu\/CCM_booklists\">this collection<\/a> holds over 400 published children\u2019s and young adult books that portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. (And it is free and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.libanswers.com\/faq\/292986\">open to the public<\/a>!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-books-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"assorted books on table\" class=\"wp-image-11242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-books-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-books.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>Some highlighted titles from 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/claspprograms.org\/americas-award\/about-the-award\/\">Am\u00e9ricas Award<\/a> Research Collection<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second institute day focused on Latin America\u2019s rich history of youth activism, presented by <strong>Prof. Jessica Taft<\/strong> (University of California Santa Cruz, Latin American and Latino Studies). Returning participant <strong>Michelle Roberts<\/strong> (high school English, VA) was impressed to learn about a Latin American student culture of broad reading in social and political theory: a widespread practice that allows Latin American students to pair their own experiences with deeply-researched knowledge to advocate for change. Roberts plans to incorporate material about the Peruvian Working Children\u2019s Movement, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue-works.com\/publications\">their concept of trabajo digno<\/a> (dignified work), to help her own students reflect on how their own extensive work experiences can help them keep learning and growing as whole people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that day, participant <strong>Stephany Virrueta Herrera<\/strong> (Loyola University Chicago, School of Environmental Sustainability) appreciated a presentation from photojournalist <strong>Misha Vallejo Prut<\/strong>, who shared <a href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/stories\/amazon-new-way-live-nature\">his reporting<\/a> on how solar power supports school infrastructure in Ecuador\u2019s Amazon: said Virrueta Herrera, \u201ca lot of my students are majors in environmental sustainability, and sometimes it\u2019s hard to find stories of hope amid these [climate] changes that are happening\u2026I\u2019ll definitely be bringing that story to a few of my classes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-discussion.jpg\" alt=\"teachers discussing ideas around a table\" class=\"wp-image-11243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-discussion.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-discussion-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption><em>Educators shared ideas for incorporating institute materials into their classrooms<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Vallejo\u2019s reporting was supported by the<strong> Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting.<\/strong> The nonprofit \u2013 committed to reporting on systemic, global issues \u2013 sees classroom teachers as key partners in this endeavor, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/education\">Pulitzer\u2019s website<\/a> offers abundant free resources developed specifically for K-12 and university educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important throughline in institute conversations was the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In this vein, <strong>Mar\u00eda Morf\u00edn<\/strong> shared about her organization <a href=\"https:\/\/lajugarreta.org.mx\/\">La Jugarreta<\/a>, which promotes children\u2019s right to participate in their communities: the nonprofit facilitates play groups that center democratic decision-making among migrant youth and other vulnerable populations across Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group-discussion-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Hogan leads a discussion on how children are represented in Latin American film\u00a0\" class=\"wp-image-11244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group-discussion-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group-discussion.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>Professor Hogan leads a discussion on how children are represented in Latin American film&nbsp;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The institute concluded with a discussion of how young people are portrayed in Latin American films. <strong>Prof. Erin Hogan<\/strong> (U of Maryland Baltimore County, Spanish) shared core principles for using screen studies to build intercultural competence, along with dozens of film titles for teachers to use. Participants watched one such title \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/pragda.com\/film\/home-is-somewhere-else\/\"><em>Home is Somewhere Else<\/em><\/a> \u2013 in preparation for the event, and filmmakers <strong>Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos<\/strong> joined for a discussion of how they created this groundbreaking animated documentary, which depicts the varied migration stories of three Mexican-American youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For first-time participant <strong>Aaron Kaio<\/strong> (high school social studies, Madison), the institute helped him reconsider existing units and provided new resources for a Latin American studies class he\u2019ll be teaching for the first time this fall. And for 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, that is a sure sign the event was a success: helping educators bring more Latin American content to their classrooms \u2013 in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Madison, La Crosse, and beyond \u2013 and preparing students to be informed and empowered global citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group.jpg\" alt=\"Institute participants celebrate a successful three days of learning and collaboration\" class=\"wp-image-11245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/latin-american-caribbean-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/329\/2025\/07\/2025-summer-institute-group-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption><em>Institute participants celebrate a successful three days of learning and collaboration<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speaker-bios\">Speaker Bios<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Carlos Hagerman<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Jorge Villalobos<\/strong>&nbsp;are Mexican filmmakers known for their award-winning film&nbsp;<em>Home is Somewhere Else<\/em>&nbsp;(2023), a documentary animation that shares the rich complexity of the emotional experiences of immigrant children and families to better understand and empathize with them.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Carlos Hagerman<\/strong>&nbsp;was born in Mexico City. He received his MFA in Film at NYU as a Fulbright scholar. He worked for eight years as a director in Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s production company Zeta Films, before opening his own company. There, he produced and directed award-winning documentaries like&nbsp;<em>Those Who Remain<\/em>&nbsp;(IDA Humanitas Award 2009),&nbsp;<em>Back to Life<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>No Place Like Home<\/em>. He also co-produced&nbsp;<em>Plaza de la Soledad<\/em>&nbsp;(Sundance 2013) and&nbsp;<em>Rush Hour<\/em>&nbsp;(SXSW 2018). He is a founding partner of Brinca Animation Studio.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jorge Villalobos<\/strong>&nbsp;is a writer, director, and producer of animated and live-action projects. He directed several children\u2019s series for Canal Once, Mexico\u2019s Public TV channel. His animated and fiction short films won over 20 international awards. Since co-founding Brinca Animation Studio in 2012, Jorge and Carlos Hagerman have worked as a team, co-producing and co-directing animation projects for children and communication tools for human rights organizations like UNICEF and the Mexican Human Rights Commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Erin Hogan<\/strong>&nbsp;is Professor of Spanish at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Dr. Hogan\u2019s broader areas of research range from 17th century Spain to contemporary Latin America, and span the transnational screen arts, intercultural pedagogy, and videographic criticism. Her research particularly examines the child and the patriarchal corpse as biopolitical figures, gynocentric filmic representations of and by women, and the uses of comedy and satire for social justice. Dr. Hogan is the author of&nbsp;<em>The Two cines con ni\u00f1o: Genre and the Child Protagonist in Over Fifty Years of Spanish Film (1955-2010)<\/em>&nbsp;(Edinburgh University Press, 2018) and&nbsp;<em>Patriarchy\u2019s Remains: An Autopsy of Iberian Cinematic Dark Humour<\/em>&nbsp;(McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press, 2024), and has taught courses including \u201cFilm and Society in Latin America\u201d and \u201cPolitical Childhood and Children\u2019s Political Citizenship in Western Culture\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Julie Kline&nbsp;<\/strong>worked in the UW-Milwaukee Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies for 38 years until her retirement in 2024. She holds a BA from the Ohio State University (International Relations) and an MA from UW-Madison (Ibero-American Studies). A long-standing interest in international children\u2019s literature was shaped by a 1988 fellowship at the International Youth Library, Munich. That experience helped lay the groundwork for creation of the Am\u00e9ricas Award for Children\u2019s and Young Adult Literature, with the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP), and coordination of the award for its first 18 years, including an annual award presentation at the Library of Congress. While with 51ÁÔÆæ CLACS, Kline also taught a children\u2019s literature course online with the 51ÁÔÆæ School of Education, focused on Latin American\/Latinx cultural heritages, and co-organized multiple related public events, including the 2021 series \u201cLatin American Children\u2019s Book Creators.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mar\u00eda Morf\u00edn Stoopen<\/strong>&nbsp;is founder and Director of La Jugarreta Espacios de Participaci\u00f3n AC, an organization in Tepoztl\u00e1n, Morelos, M\u00e9xico, that since 2000 supports children in proposing and directing collective projects for the good of the community based on their own interests. Morf\u00edn has a degree in Social Communication from Mexico\u2019s Autonomous Metropolitan University and has consulted for multiple institutions on the implementation of programs promoting child and youth participation (including UNICEF, National System for the Integral Development of the Family, Ministry of Culture, National Electoral Institute). In addition to offering extensive trainings for educators and parents, she is the author of various books, guides, and articles on child and youth participation, such as&nbsp;<em>Child and Youth Participation: A Guide for its Promotion<\/em>&nbsp;(2012).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Jessica Taft<\/strong>&nbsp;is Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz and the Faculty Director of the Dolores Huerta Research Center for the Americas. Her research focuses on young people\u2019s contributions to social change through activism and social movements in North and South America. She is the author of&nbsp;<em>Rebel Girls: Youth Activism and Social Change Across the Americas<\/em>&nbsp;(NYU Press, 2011),&nbsp;<em>The Kids Are in Charge: Activism and Power in Peru\u2019s Movement of Working Children<\/em>&nbsp;(NYU Press, 2019), and numerous journal articles on girls\u2019 activism, children\u2019s participation, youth politics, and intergenerational dynamics within social movements. Dr. Taft is part of a variety of local, national, and international collaborative projects focused on child and youth participation and has worked with funders and non-governmental organizations to deepen their analysis of the challenges and possibilities of meaningful engagement with young people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Misha Vallejo Prut<\/strong>&nbsp;is an Ecuadorian audiovisual artist and storyteller whose work blurs the line between documentary and art. His projects explore glocal issues: themes that appear local but reveal global dimensions through his lens. With an MA in Documentary Photography from the University of the Arts London, Misha is the author of three internationally award-winning photobooks as well as the interactive documentary secretsarayaku.net. His photography has appeared in&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Washington Post<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>VICE<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>GEO<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Stern<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Marie Claire<\/em>, among others, and his exhibitions have also traveled globally. Misha is currently based in Ecuador, where he continues to develop new audiovisual projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Gabriel Velez<\/strong>&nbsp;is Associate Professor in Educational Policy and Leadership in the College of Education at Marquette University. Dr. Velez studies identity development in adolescents, particularly in relation to citizenship, human rights, restorative justice, and peace. Dr. Velez has a forthcoming book entitled&nbsp;<em>Making Meaning of Justice and Peace: A Developmental Lens to Restorative Justice and Peace Education<\/em>, and is working on another manuscript on adolescent development, education, and artificial intelligence, both with Cambridge University Press.
