James Loeffler, Johns Hopkins University<\/strong><\/p>\n

Searching for Raphael Lemkin: On the Study of Jewish Universalism<\/strong><\/p>\n

How does the particular produce the universal? In this seminar, I discuss how Jewish Studies engages this question by drawing on research on Raphael Lemkin\u2019s creation of the legal concept of genocide in interwar Polish Jewish culture.<\/p>\n

James Loeffler<\/strong>\u00a0is Felix Posen Professor of Jewish History at Johns Hopkins University. His writings include two award-winning books,\u00a0Rooted Cosmopolitans: Jews and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the Late Russian Empire<\/em>. He is currently writing a book about antisemitism and the First Amendment in postwar America.<\/p>\n
