{"id":7456,"date":"2023-03-08T14:39:44","date_gmt":"2023-03-08T20:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/webid2-test-lsweb\/?page_id=7456"},"modified":"2025-08-27T15:07:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T20:07:27","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/jewish-studies\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies sponsors a variety of public programming, supports the development of courses related to Jews and Judaism at the University, and houses the Jewish Studies major and minor as well as the certificate in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We engage members of the Milwaukee community hosting on and off campus events, co-sponsoring events with other Milwaukee organizations, and inviting engaging speakers and performers to Milwaukee who can build bridges across identities and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/jewish-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/434\/2017\/03\/cjs_logo_300.png\" alt=\"cjs_logo_300\" class=\"wp-image-155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/jewish-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/434\/2017\/03\/cjs_logo_300.png 295w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/jewish-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/434\/2017\/03\/cjs_logo_300-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our \u201cColors of Jewishness\u201d series, made possible by the generous support of Bader Philanthropies, explores the diversity of the Jewish community and the connections between Jews and other minority groups. Recent luminaries brought to Milwaukee through this series include culinary historian Michael Twitty, singers Anthony Russell and Sarah Aroeste, and painter Siona Benjamin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The yearly Faye Sigman \u201cWoman of Valor\u201d lecture, made possible by the generous support of the Taxman and Temkin families, highlights the contributions of Jewish women. Past speakers have included Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Hasia Diner, Jill Dolan, and 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Lisa Silverman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the generosity of the Baye Foundation and Bader Philanthropies, the Stahl Center features an annual Distinguished Lecture. Among the notable scholars who have presented the Distinguished Lecture are Michael Twitty, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Kimblett, and Jeffrey Shandler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partnerships with many departments and programs on campus, and a wide variety of community organizations, are vital to our success. Students may also choose to minor in Jewish Studies. Both the major and minor may be completed fully online. Fully online students are eligible for special pricing that aligns the cost per credit to a level close to in-state tuition. This makes the program particularly attractive to out-of-state and international students without the need to pay out-of-state tuition.
