{"id":7578,"date":"2024-04-02T15:38:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T20:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/?p=7578"},"modified":"2026-03-30T04:31:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T09:31:07","slug":"love-of-tech-and-desire-to-help-draw-student-to-nonprof-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/love-of-tech-and-desire-to-help-draw-student-to-nonprof-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Love of tech and desire to help draw student to nonprof-IT\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lauren Rodriguez knew she wanted a major related to technology, so she started her studies at 51ÁÔÆæ in computer science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in computers and technology, so my major was going to be something related to that,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after her first year she switched to the BSIST program (<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/academic-programs\/information-science-and-technology\/\">bachelor of science in information science &amp; technology<\/a>) because she wanted to expand how she used computer technology. \u201cI never considered BSIST before coming here, but once I was in the program my advisors showed me a path I could possibly take, and it ended up working out. I enjoy it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"uwm-f-quote\"><blockquote>&#8220;I\u2019m getting more out of IST because it\u2019s a combination of client communication as well as IT network, website building and social media management. I just really appreciated the program&#8221;<\/blockquote><figcaption>Lauren Rodriguez, IST Major and Nonprof-IT Intern<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m getting more out of IST because it\u2019s a combination of client communication as well as IT network, website building and social media management. I just really appreciated the program,\u201d she added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez, a junior who is from Milwaukee and now lives in Greendale, has especially enjoyed her experiences in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/community-engagement\/nonprof-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nonprof-IT program<\/a>, which pairs students with nonprofit organizations that need help with IT-related issues. The organizations save money, and the students gain real-world experience. \u201cIt\u2019s a combination of communication as well as back-end work,\u201d Rodriguez said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being able to work nonprof-IT is one of the reasons she stayed in the BSIST program, Rodriguez said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to have experience before you graduate and have to find a job.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the fall semester, she was part of a project with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpingwildlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wildlife in Need Center<\/a>. She found that fun and interesting, she said. \u201cThe Wildlife in Need Center rehabilitates and cares for wild animals that have been injured, diseased, or orphaned,\u201d she said. \u201cThrough their care the nonprofit aims to return the animals back to their appropriate habitats in the wild.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the spring 2023 semester, she worked with a team that helped the Milwaukee Turners migrate their \u201cJane\u2019s Walk MKE\u201d website content to their main site, providing cost savings and easier management of the event. Jane\u2019s Walks share urban activist\/author Jane Jacobs\u2019 legacy by organizing free, resident-led neighborhood explorations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/609\/2024\/04\/news_Rodriguez-Lauren_750X500.jpg\" alt=\"Lauren Rodriguez, Information Science &amp; Technology Student and nonprof-IT participant\" class=\"wp-image-7580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/609\/2024\/04\/news_Rodriguez-Lauren_750X500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/609\/2024\/04\/news_Rodriguez-Lauren_750X500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>Lauren Rodriguez, 51ÁÔÆæ Bachelor of Science in Information Science &amp; Technology Major and Nonprof-IT Intern<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez, who is Hispanic, chose to come to 51ÁÔÆæ because of its strong Hispanic representation and overall diversity. The BSIST program is one of the fastest growing and most diverse programs in the School of Information Studies with 500 students, according to Chad Zahrt, SOIS assistant dean for student services and operations. Unlike some other technology fields which involve a majority of white males, BSIST attracts large numbers of women as well as African American, Latinx, Native American and Hmong students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also benefit from the ease of credit transfer and the minimum courses required for the major, according to Zahrt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez has an internship at MGIC providing technical support to end-users and managing and deploying hardware. \u201cThat\u2019s another good opportunity I\u2019ve had through 51ÁÔÆæ,\u201d Rodriguez said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce you get that ball rolling, it\u2019s very easy to continue getting the opportunities here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While she\u2019s enjoying the work at MGIC, her long-term goal after graduation in May 2025 is doing something similar to what she\u2019s done with nonprof-IT. \u201cI lean more toward a manager and leader position in IT.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lauren Rodriguez knew she wanted a major related to technology, so she started her studies at 51ÁÔÆæ in computer science.&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in computers and technology, so my major was going to be something related to that,\u201d she &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3016,"featured_media":7579,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","uwm_wg_additional_authors":[]},"categories":[24,41,25],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7578","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-nonprof-it","category-spotlight-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
