{"id":1554,"date":"2022-09-28T15:17:46","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T20:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/?page_id=1554"},"modified":"2026-04-01T16:52:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:52:35","slug":"student-web-space","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/students\/it-department\/tutorials\/student-web-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Web Space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--info\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-info-circle fa-fw\"><\/i>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\">\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--title\">Changes to SOIS Web Space Access<\/div>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">Beginning January 7, 2025 the SOISWEB environment will require a 51ÁÔÆæ VPN connection (for access off-campus), an on-campus wired connection, or a WiFi connection to 51ÁÔÆæWiFi or Eduroam WiFi (not 51ÁÔÆæVisitor) for web server administrative tasks such as SFTP\/SSH and cPanel web portal access.<\/p>\n\nThis change would still allow website viewing access on HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) from anywhere.<\/p> \n\nInstructions on installation\/setup and usage of the 51ÁÔÆæ VPN can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/uwmhd\/search.php?cat=5092\" rel=\"ugc\">VPN Knowledgebase Articles<\/a>. <\/p>\n\nIf you encounter problems with SOISWEB after this change is implemented, please contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/technology\/help\/\" rel=\"ugc\">51ÁÔÆæ Helpdesk<\/a> to report the issue.  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--info\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-info-circle fa-fw\"><\/i>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\">\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--title\">SOIS Web Space Maintenance<\/div>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">SOISWEB may be unavailable from 6:00am-8:00am every Tuesday for maintenance.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>SOIS Students have access to free space on our&nbsp;<strong>LAMP<\/strong>&nbsp;server. A&nbsp;<strong>LAMP<\/strong> environment is a standard open-source software stack. This acronym stands for&nbsp;Linux,&nbsp;Apache,&nbsp;MySQL, and&nbsp;PHP. With this service students have the ability to learn and experiment with Web Design and Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOIS Students will be granted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5GB of Space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MySQL Databases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SFTP Access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This space is to be used for SOIS course purposes&nbsp;<strong>ONLY<\/strong>. This space is&nbsp;<b>not <\/b>intended for research projects, personal sites, or anything of a non-instructional\/non-SOIS course related purpose. If you wish to use the web space for any other educational purposes please contact the 51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk&nbsp;to ensure your account is not suspended and terminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The server will be purged each semester and will not be backed up. It is highly recommended that students retain copies of their website offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that being said; if you have issues and wish to request unofficial support please contact the 51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk. We will do our best to provide general guidance. Your SOIS instructor will also be able to give you an overview of how to connect and manage your SOIS web space for your course. Campus Technology Support does not provide homework help or tutoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\" id=\"h-how-to-access-the-sois-web-space\">How to Access the SOIS Web Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To access your account please&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sois-auth.ad.uwm.edu\/acctmgmt\/register.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">register<\/a>&nbsp;using your 51ÁÔÆæ ePanther ID and password. If you are unable to register please contact the 51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk&nbsp;and request access. Please be sure to email us using your 51ÁÔÆæ email and provide the SOIS courses which you are enrolled in the current semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have forgotten your password you may reset it using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sois-auth.ad.uwm.edu\/acctmgmt\/passwordreset.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our online self-service tool<\/a>. Please note that this tool will only change your web space password and not your ePanther password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-urls-to-access-and-modify-your-web-space-are-as-follows\"><strong>URLs to Access and Modify your Web Space are as follows<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Web&nbsp;URL:<\/strong>&nbsp;https:\/\/your-ePantherID.soisweb.uwm.edu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FTP Access:<\/strong>\u00a0sftp:\/\/soisweb.uwm.edu<br>Login with your 51ÁÔÆæ ePantherID and the password that you set. You can use any FTP client of your choice. Please note that the password that you set when you register for the web space is different than your 51ÁÔÆæ ePanther password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Control Panel URL:<\/strong>\u00a0https:\/\/soisweb.uwm.edu\/cpanel<br>Login with your 51ÁÔÆæ ePantherID and password that you set.\u00a0Please note that the password that you set when you register for the web space is different than your 51ÁÔÆæ ePanther password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SSH Access:&nbsp;<\/strong>soisweb.uwm.edu<br>If you want to use GIT or any other command line tool with your account you should&nbsp;use SSH. The suggested windows SSH client is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/download.html\">Putty<\/a>, while MacOS users can use terminal. The host is soisweb.uwm.edu and the default port of 22 can be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to replace \u201cyour-ePantherID\u201d with\u00a0<strong>your<\/strong>\u00a0actual ePanther ID and password that you set while registering for your web space. Please remember you must\u00a0<strong>first\u00a0<\/strong>register in order to login and access your space and that\u00a0<strong>the web space password that you set will be different<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>than your 51ÁÔÆæ ePanther ID password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Troubleshooting \u201cInternal Server Error\u201d &amp; PHP Permissions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you run into an \u201cInternal Server Error\u201d message, it may mean that your permissions are set incorrectly on your files and directories. All directories should be set to a permission of 755 and all PHP files to a permission of 644.
