To connect, plug a laptop into the jack for full access to the internet on the campus network. Most data jacks are identified with a &#8220;D;&#8221; voice jacks are identified with a &#8220;V.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-offices\">Offices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most 51ÁÔÆæ campus offices come equipped with network jacks. Activating a network jack requires a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/wifi\/wired-network-and-telephone-services-order\/\">Wired Network and Telephone Services Order<\/a>. Most data jacks are identified with a &#8220;D;&#8221; voice jacks are identified with a &#8220;V.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wired-network-troubleshooting\">Wired Network Troubleshooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are experiencing wired network issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure all cords are securely plugged into the data jack itself (the black port in the jack is for data connections; it may contain a \u201cD\u201d on the label).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the WiFi on the device plugging into the data jack is disabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only jacks made active will be provided connectivity. If you would like to activate a data jack, please complete a service order <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/wifi\/wired-network-and-telephone-services-order\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have completed the above steps and your issue was not resolved, contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/help\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emergency-phones\">Emergency Phones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency telephones provide an automatic connection to emergency services. Depending on the phone&#8217;s location, you will either be connected to 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s Police Department or the Milwaukee Police Department. You can find emergency phones throughout campus, including at least one telephone on each level of parking structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency phones can be found in bright yellow boxes mounted on black poles topped with blue lights. The black poles have EMERGENCY written on them and the yellow cases are marked for emergency use. See image for reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use an Emergency Phone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the door to the box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold the red button until the call is answered.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Placing a call using an emergency phone will provide police with that phone&#8217;s location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These telephones are intended for emergency use only. For example, if the 7 digit phone number is 229-1122, the last four digits would be 1122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are placing a call from an on-campus landline to a local, long distance, or international phone number, you must dial 9 followed by the one digit country code, the 3-digit area code, and the 7-digit phone number. For example: 9+1+(414) 229-1122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most local calling is free, but charges are incurred for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operator assistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Directory assistance*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long distance dialing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*<\/strong>Free directory assistance is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anywho.com\/\">anywho.com<\/a>. When calling directory assistance, dial the number yourself rather than having the operator connect you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-handling-threatening-calls\">Handling Threatening Calls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel threatened, abused, or harassed by a phone call:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hang up immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you continue to receive similar calls, contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/police\/about\/contact\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Police Department<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calls including threats to life and\/or property should be reported to the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write down the statements made by the caller or record the call.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep track of the date, time, and phone line the call came in on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have received the call via voicemail, do not erase the message until directed to do so by the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If these calls continue, the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department can try tracing the caller.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is important to note that the caller&#8217;s name and telephone number will not be shared with the person who generated the complaint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-telephone-troubleshooting\">Telephone Troubleshooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Below you can find troubleshooting information for when telephone issues arise.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jacks\">Jacks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Wall jacks have two access points: one for phone and one for computer data. Be sure to plug the phone cord into the voice portion of the wall jack. It is white and may be labeled with a \u201cV\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phone-not-ringing\">Phone not ringing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Common causes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ringer may be off.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check to make sure the ringer is on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The phone cord is loose or in the wrong port.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your phone cords are securely plugged into the back of the phone and into the jack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The phone cord should only be plugged into the white portion of the jack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardware malfunctions happen.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A faulty phone\/cord may cause this problem. Replace your current phone and cord with one you know is working. Make sure the phone is plugged into the white portion of the jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your issue persists, please contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/help\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-t-access-voicemail-box\">Can&#8217;t access voicemail box<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive a message saying that the box cannot be accessed, a PIN reset may be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/help\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Help Desk<\/a>&nbsp;to have your PIN reset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-dial-tone\">No dial tone<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Common causes for no dial tones:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loose\/broken phone cords<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phone cords plugged into the wrong portion of the jack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple buttons being pressed simultaneously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conference button being pressed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phone malfunctions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No phone number connected to the jack\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you would like to add\/move a phone number to a voice jack, please complete a service order <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/wifi\/wired-network-and-telephone-services-order\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note: If your phone is connected to a shared line, it is important to check all phones with the same telephone number for issues. Accessing&nbsp;Voicemail<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-setting-up-your-voice-mailbox\">Setting up your Voice Mailbox<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Access your Voice Mailbox using the steps outlined under &#8220;Accessing Your Voice Mailbox&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From there, follow the auto enrollment instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you have completed setup, the system will prompt you that you have finished enrollment.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you don&#8217;t complete the process, the system will not enroll the mailbox and you will not hear this prompt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are prompted to set up a recorded name, personal greeting and change your password.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To exit, press * or hang up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accessing-your-voice-mailbox\">Accessing Your Voice Mailbox<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are calling from an on-campus landline, dial 9+1+(414) 227-5140.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are calling from the phone associated with the mailbox, press *.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter your ID (area code + 7-digit phone number of the voice mailbox being set-up) followed by the pound sign (#).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you hear &#8220;I did not recognize that as a valid entry&#8221;, that 10-digit phone number does not have a state-provided voice mailbox.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter PIN followed by the pound sign (#).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you haven&#8217;t set up your mailbox yet, type: 78283942014 followed by the pound sign (#).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your PIN has been reset, type: 4142295800 followed by the pound sign (#).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;ve forgotten your PIN or hear &#8220;PIN is invalid&#8221; contact the Network Operations Center using the contact information at the top of this page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow prompts until the end to complete enrollment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recording-greetings\">Recording Greetings<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>To record a greeting once you have set up your voicemail, press 1 then 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recording-your-name-as-your-greeting\">Recording your name as your greeting:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Press 1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the tone, say your first and last name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When done, press the pound sign (#).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will play your newly recorded name back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the pound sign (#) to keep it, or press 1 to re-record.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recording-a-personalized-greeting\">Recording a personalized greeting:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Press 1, then 1 again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak your greeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When done, press the pound sign (#).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will play your newly recorded greeting back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To accept this greeting and continue, press the pound sign (#).
