Students earn college credits, develop valuable contacts and enhance their academic record, making themselves more attractive to a range of employers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">When are internships available?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Students must have completed at least 8 credits of study in the MHRLR Program before obtaining an internship. Internships can be taken in any semester (Spring, Summer or Fall.) Placement dates may overlap semesters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What kind of work do interns do?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Interns are directly involved in all aspects of human resource and labor relations work. Past work experiences have included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>salary and classification analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>affirmative action planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ADA planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>employee handbook development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EEOC complaint investigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>employee relations, benefits and job evaluation assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contract negotiation participation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What types of organizations provide internships?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Student interns have access to a variety of employers in both the public and private sectors. Organizations that have provided internships include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Federation of State, County &amp; Municipal Employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cedar Lake United Educator\u2019s Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>City of Milwaukee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dresser Industries, Inc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Johnson Controls, Inc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Journal-Sentinel, Inc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Klein, Dub &amp; Holler, Ltd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MRA-Management Association, Inc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milwaukee Center for Independence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National Labor Relations Board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S.C. Scheduling of hours is arranged between the intern and the supervisor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Are internships paid?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Some internships are paid with rates normally ranging between $8.00 and $10.00 per hour. Others, while unpaid, can offer valuable work experience, important contacts and excellent future employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">How is course credit applied to internships?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Students register for the MHRLR internship prior to starting work. Students can sign up under Ind Rel 921 or Bus Adm 899 for a three credit internship. In some cases, a student may wish to do six credits, in which case the student undertakes two separate internships, each for 3 credits.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What is the grading procedure?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Papers describe and apply the work experience to the ideas and concepts addressed in the classroom. Copies of documents prepared are usually attached to the paper. Students are advised to keep a daily diary of their experiences. This does not have to be submitted, but will be valuable in preparing the paper. See the Internship Paper Requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What is required for the paper?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-internship-paper-requirements\">Internship Paper Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading uwm-u-mb-0\" id=\"h-length\">Length:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-u-mt-10\">Approximately 10-15 pages (double-spaced)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading uwm-u-mb-0\" id=\"h-content\">Content:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading uwm-u-mt-10\" id=\"h-introduction\">Introduction:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>include introductory comments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide brief description of organization\/department (approximately 1\/2 page in length)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-body-of-paper\">Body of Paper:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>describe specific job duties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>relate how certain tasks connect to course work completed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>show how assignments contribute to overall goals of the organization\/department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>include recommendations for organization\/department<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connection with or contribution to career goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discuss overall experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-attachments\">Attachments:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>attach relevant documents, when appropriate*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>*Note: Attachments are considered supplements that add to or clarify the paper.
