The Lurie Labor-Management Cooperation Prize went to the Wisconsin Building Trades and Wisconsin’s Major Utilities.  Four unions and four companies agreed to a first of its kind pledge to use unionized labor in the construction of hundreds of renewable and green energy investments over the next decade. The new agreement forgoes the individual arguments, provided critical training, allows for competitive labor standards, including standardized local wages and benefits.

Please Join Dean Scott Gronert, College of Letters and Science; Dean Kaushal Chari, Sheldon B. Lubar College of Business; and John Heywood, Director, Master of Human Resources and Labor Relations to celebrate 37 years of the Melvin and Lois Lurie Memorial Prize. This prize honors an outstanding MHRLR student and the 27th Labor-Management Cooperation prize winner: The Wisconsin Building Trades and Major Electric Utilities.

We will be following all CDC and City of Milwaukee COVID guidelines.

Melvin Lurie (1923-1987) was a beloved professor of economics at 51 and founder of this Masters program. Professor Lurie’s vision was to create a course of study that instills its graduates with the desire to build cooperative relationships between labor and management. With its grounding in both the liberal arts and business administration, graduates obtain the educational underpinnings so critical to the real world of human resource and labor relations practitioners.

The Melvin Lurie Memorial Fund provides an annual prize to a student who has demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and has achieved academic excellence in completing the Masters Program in Human Resources and Labor Relations. The Fund also honors alumni or members of the Wisconsin labor- management community for outstanding service in the cause of promoting, creating or researching labor-management cooperation.

The MHRLR Outreach Fund supports non- academic program initiatives that benefit students, alumni, faculty, and leaders in the labor and management communities. The Fund, for example, sponsors speakers and supports a newsletter, an alumni directory and the annual Melvin Lurie Memorial Prize Ceremony.

The Lurie Labor-Management Cooperation Prize went to bargaining partners Northwestern Mutual and OPEIU Local 9. Bargaining partners since the 1940s, each organization has a long history. Northwestern Mutual started in Wisconsin in 1857 and OPEIU’s history in the region dates to 1906 when Local 1 received the first clerical federal charter from the American Federation of Labor. Each side of this long relationship spoke of the need for balance and respect. They stressed the importance of a satisfied and productive workforce. Disagreements are intrinsic, but these partners engage in those disagreements with commitment to the process. Well done!

Elise White won the Melvin and Lois Lurie Student Prize. She described how her undergraduate class in industrial psychology piqued her interest in helping create a fair and supportive workplace that fosters employee well-being. She found MHRLR to be the perfect match for her aspirations.  She loved the certificate in Mediation and Negotiation and gained skills and perspective from work with the Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire.  Elise explained that she gained confidence over her time in the program and came to realize that all can grow by sharing their varying perspectives.  An internship with Johnson Controls (thanks to alum Jon Evert) resulted in a permanent HR generalist position with Johnson Controls, which she calls a large company with great values. Congratulations to Elise!

This year we honored WRTP / BIGSTEP.  The Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership provides successful pre-employment training for job seekers to qualify for family sustaining industrial jobs.   They joined the Building Industry Group Skilled Trade Employment Program which offers individualized tutoring in academic skills for apprenticeship exams.  The results have been remarkable with many minorities and women placed in family supporting jobs.  WRTP / BIGSTEP has leadership and financial support from both unions and management.  As President Lindsey Blumer told us both sides are committed to creating career opportunities for those who might otherwise be left out — “on this issue unions and management don’t sit on different sides of the table.”

This year we had two student winners – a tie we couldn’t break.!

Andrew Stark described his employment trajectory at Molson Coors and his increasing involvement with the union.  The local president for the last nine years, he felt the need for greater education and came to MHRLR.  He expressed concern that his background from organized labor would not fit in. Instead, he found his views and leadership were greatly appreciated in our classrooms and his performance was superb.

Katerina Ekonomou relocated from a small Greek community and described how the MHRLR degree was essential to beginning a human resources career.  Not only did she credit the program with providing a well-rounded perspective on human resources functions, but it helped her gain confidence and convinced her that hard work can make dreams come true.  She loved the opportunity to learn from others and to exhibit her own leadership.  She now works in HR at Potawatomi Hotel and Casino.

We were delighted to present Monique Miller with the Melvin and Lois Lurie Student Award.  Monique, like many MHRLR students returned to school part-time while continuing her career.  She reported that her graduation and the Lurie award should be encouragement to others.  It is never too late to further your education no matter the circumstances. As Monique says, “even with all the challenges of the last 18 months, working students rose to the challenge.”   They, like Monique, persevere.
