  {"id":1976,"date":"2024-12-21T20:19:12","date_gmt":"2024-12-22T02:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/hr\/?page_id=1976"},"modified":"2026-03-31T08:48:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T13:48:09","slug":"telecommuting-guideline","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/hr\/policies\/telecommuting-guideline\/","title":{"rendered":"Telecommuting Guideline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p class=\"size-p-sm\"><strong>Updated:<\/strong> August 18, 2025<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--6\">\n<p class=\"lead-in\">The University of Wisconsin System Administrative Policy 1228 \u201cTelecommuting (Remote Work)\u201d (SYS 1228) effective August 1, 2024, provides a framework for the creation of telecommuting (remote work) agreements authorizing employees to work at alternate work locations. The Policy applies to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (51ÁÔÆæ) and its employees. Pursuant to SYS 1228, 51ÁÔÆæ and other institutions governed by the policy may develop their own policies, procedures, and\/or guidance, using this System policy as minimum level of restriction. Accordingly, informed by SYS 1228, 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s policy includes the following local refinements and elaborations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 51ÁÔÆæ policy applies to all employees who work remotely and employees who supervise remote employees. Faculty and Instructional Academic Staff who are assigned a remote work site, work out-of-state, work internationally, or who work remotely and do not have access to a workspace or office at 51ÁÔÆæ are required to complete a telecommuting agreement form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The terms \u201ctelecommuting,\u201d \u201cremote work,\u201d and \u201ctelework\u201d are interchangeable and all refer to the concept of remote work under the new policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New terminology in SYS 1228 refers to \u201cHeadquarters Location.\u201d In the 51ÁÔÆæ policy, this is the \u201c51ÁÔÆæ work location.\u201d This is assigned at the time of hire or upon entering into a remote work agreement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIntermittent Telecommuting\u201d has been replaced by the term \u201cWorkplace Flexibility\u201d per SYS 1228. Workplace flexibility, where work is performed remotely on a sporadic, infrequent basis, does not require a telecommuting agreement.
