One of the easiest ways to contribute to the health of our planet is through recycling! University Housing has developed a recycling program that allows for the collection and easy separation of recyclables from the general waste stream. 51ÁÔÆæ uses single-stream recycling, where different recyclables&nbsp;<strong><em>do not<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;need to be sorted into different bins. The only item we DO separate out is cardboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More questions about recycling on campus? The following items either belong in the trash or need a few more steps before they can be recycled.&nbsp;You can also choose a more sustainable&nbsp;option, such as reusable water bottles, shampoo bars,&nbsp;or&nbsp;detergent sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These items are trash, unless you Level Up!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>(Grind) Coffee cups<\/strong><br><strong><em>Learn why.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>The paper cups used for coffee are lined with plastic and usually contain coffee, lattes, and other liquids which contaminate the rest of our recycling.<br><strong><em>Level up!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Remove and recycle the cardboard sleeve. The cup and lid are still trash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cold beverage cups<\/strong><br><strong><em>Learn why.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;The liquid and ice in beverage cups contaminate other recyclables. The straw and lid are not recyclable.<br><strong><em>Level up!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Empty your beverage containers out into a sink and give them a rinse in order to recycle the plastic cup. The lid and straw are still trash.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pizza boxes<br><\/strong><strong><em>Learn why.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Pizza boxes are trash because the cardboard is contaminated with grease, cheese, and food.<strong><br><\/strong><strong><em>Level up<\/em><\/strong><strong>!&nbsp;<\/strong>If the top of the pizza box is clean and does not have any grease, cheese, or food residue, you can rip off the top of the box to recycle. The rest of the box is still trash!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Food and to-go containers with food<\/strong><br><strong><em>Learn why.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Food is not recyclable because it contaminates the rest of our recycling.<br><strong><em>Level up!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Look into our in-house composting program,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/sustainability\/what-we-do\/food\/compost\/\">Panther Pails<\/a>,&nbsp;if you want to reduce your food waste.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liquids<\/strong><br><strong><em>Learn why.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Liquids are not recyclable because they contaminate the rest of our good recycling. Never recycle any containers that have liquids in them and never dump liquid into a recycling bin.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plastic grocery bags, zip bags, mailing sleeves, and packaging<\/strong><br><strong><em>Learn why.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Thin plastics like plastic bags are difficult to separate in the recycling process as they wrap around sorting equipment or tangle with other recyclables.<br><strong><em>Level up!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Choose paper packaging and\/or consolidated shipping for fewer boxes and shipping materials when the option is available.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Laundry detergent<\/strong><br><strong>Learn why.<\/strong>&nbsp;Rinse out your laundry detergent jug thoroughly before recycling to prevent a foamy or sticky mess that can contaminate other recyclables.<br><strong><em>Level up!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Switch to buying and using laundry sheets to cut down on plastic packaging.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Damaged clothing, ceramic cups\/plates\/bowls, holiday decorations<\/strong><br><strong><em>Level up!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Donate items that are in good condition.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plastic utensils (forks, knives, spoons, and straws)<\/strong><br><strong><em>Level up!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>If possible, try to use plastic utensils more than once.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Styrofoam and packing peanuts (polystyrene)<\/strong><br><strong><em>Level up!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Opt for companies that use more sustainable packaging.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-recycle-in-university-housing\"><strong>How to Recycle in University Housing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know&nbsp;<strong>what&nbsp;<\/strong>you can recycle, you can learn&nbsp;<strong>how&nbsp;<\/strong>to recycle. If The Lid Is Free Of Grease, Cheese, And Food, Rip Your Pizza Box To Recycle The Clean Top And Trash The Greasy Bottom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Different Recycling Receptacles\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suite Recycling Bins Are Great For Carrying A Lot Of Recyclables!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If You Are On Your Way To A Class Or To Meet Some Friends, Use A Paper Bag To Gather Your Recyclables So You Don&#8217;t Need To Return To Your Room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean Your Suite Recycling Bin\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be Sure To Clean Your Suite Recycling Bin Regularly To Prevent Mess, Odor, And Contamination Of Future Recyclables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use A Wipe Or Rinse Out Bin In Your Shower For Deep Cleans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Line Your Bin With A Paper Bag To Help Keep Your Bin Clean<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic Bags Are Always Trash.
