{"id":15144,"date":"2024-07-30T09:32:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T14:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/?page_id=15144"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T16:51:07","slug":"security-guest-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/policies\/security-guest-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Security &amp; Guest Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University Housing Security staffs are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and can be found at each building\u2019s Service Desk, either in-person, or by calling the duty phone (should security not be present at Kenilworth and RiverView).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to facilitate a safe, comfortable environment conductive to academics and personal growth, University Housing provides the following services to help residents and their guests stay secure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/amenities\/guests\/\">GuestPass<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security Monitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locks and deadbolts on room and suite doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, University Housing highly encourages residents to program the campus emergency number (<strong>414-229-9911<\/strong>) into their cell phones* for fast response in case of an emergency. Regular 911 calls will still go through; however, they are first routed through the Milwaukee City emergency system&nbsp;<em><strong>before being forwarded<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;to the University Police, which affects response time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Residents using a cell phone as a primary phone are expected to submit their phone number to the 51ÁÔÆæ Campus Directory which can be done online using PAWS.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a0\">Security Monitors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Security Monitors are located in the lobbies of Cambridge Commons, Kenilworth, RiverView, and Sandburg. Residents are required to carry their 51ÁÔÆæ ID with them at all times in order to gain access into the residence halls. Kenilworth does not require a swipe of the ID to enter past the Service Desk, though residents may be asked to show their IDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doors to Kenilworth, RiverView and Cambridge are locked 24 hours a day. Residents of these buildings will need to use their student ID to open the door. Guests can be buzzed in by Security staff to meet their host in the lobby. Guests must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/forms-publications\/\">register with University Housing<\/a>, follow the guest policies (see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/policies\/forms-publications\/\">Resident Handbook<\/a>) and be escorted by their hosts at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a1\">Keys &amp; Key-Ins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the time a resident picks up a room key until it is returned, the resident is responsible for the room and its contents, as well as any contract charges. The room key must be kept in the resident\u2019s possession during the contract period and may not be loaned to anyone for any reason. Keys may not be altered or duplicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If a resident is locked out<\/strong>, they may call the Service Desk of their building to be let into their room. If the key has been lost, the lock will be changed and the lock-change cost billed to the resident\u2019s University Housing Account. Multiple key-ins can result in administrative fees being applied to the resident\u2019s PAWS Account. Please see the University Housing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/housing\/forms-publications\/\">Resident Handbook<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will not be charged for your first and second key-ins. Any key in following your second will be charged to your University Housing Account, as indicated below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st-2nd Key-Ins: Free<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3rd-5th Key-Ins: $25 each<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6th Key-In: $25 + $75 lock-change fee + a meeting with professional staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All room and suite doors are equipped with deadbolts.
