Lisa Silverman in Conversation with Alan Singer\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Decades before the Nazi persecution of the Jews would emerge as a master moral paradigm of evil in popular culture, the constructed Antisemite became part of a forceful narrative structure that allowed stereotypes about Jews to persist, even as explicit antisemitism became taboo. In the recently released\u00a0The Postwar Antisemite,\u00a0<\/em>Lisa Silverman examines the crucial development and implications of the figural Antisemite in a range of events in Austria, Germany, and the United States including the trials of Nazi star director Veit Harlan for crimes against humanity, the works of authors Anna Seghers and Rudolf Brunngraber, and films including\u00a0Gentleman\u2019s Agreement<\/em>. Join us at Boswell for an important conversation about this history and what it reveals about antisemitism.<\/p>\n

Lisa Silverman<\/strong>\u00a0is Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She specializes in modern German and Austrian Jewish cultural history, with a focus on gender, visual culture, and antisemitism. She is also author of\u00a0Becoming Austrians: Jews and Culture between the World Wars<\/em>\u00a0(Oxford, 2012) and co-author with Daniel H. Magilow of\u00a0Holocaust Representations in History: an Introduction\u00a0<\/em>(Bloomsbury, 2015; 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0ed. 2019).<\/p>\n

Alan H. Singer<\/strong>\u00a0is Associate Teaching Professor in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Honors College, where he teaches courses on social, intellectual, and political history. His courses include: \u201cThe Oldest Hatred: The Jewish People as the Perpetual Other\u201d, \u201cWe, Ourselves: Nations and Nationalisms in the Modern World\u201d, and \u201cTransatlantic Revolutions: Resistance, Rebellion and Social Conflict, 1650-1800\u201d.\u00a0 His research focuses on how cultural representations of Jews were used in political and social conflict.<\/p>\n
