{"id":3967,"date":"2022-10-05T10:14:54","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T15:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/history\/?page_id=3967"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:44:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T16:44:50","slug":"graduate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/history\/students\/graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"uwm-u-pb-80 uwm-u-pt-0\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p class=\"lead-in\">The Department of History offers MA and PhD programs that prepare students for careers in historical research, teaching, archival work, museum curation or administration, historical societies, preservation agencies, libraries, government and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\">Master&#8217;s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default\">At the Master&#8217;s level, the Department offers four options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a general master of arts in history with or without a thesis;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a general master of arts in history with a specialization in urban historical studies for students who intend to pursue interdisciplinary doctoral studies for example the PhD in Urban Studies;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a master of arts in public history for those interested in specialized areas such as museum work, archival administration, historic preservation, nonprofit administration,  or cross-disciplinary studies; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a joint master&#8217;s program in history and in library and information science leading to a master of arts degree in history (MA) and a master of library information science (MLIS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\">Doctoral<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default\">The PhD program prepares students to enter the highest levels of the discipline, as well as related fields of knowledge and practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default\">Student life in the History Department is vibrant and active at both the master&#8217;s and doctoral level. Research activity is high and engagement thrives informally and through the 51ÁÔÆæ History Graduate Students Association (HGSA) which sponsors speakers, workshops, presentations of research, and social events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/51ÁÔÆæHGSA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ History Graduate Students Association on Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, applicants to the master&#8217;s degree will have a bachelor&#8217;s degree in history or related discipline. Applications for the master&#8217;s programs are accepted for either a fall or spring start, with priority given to applications received by December 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants for the PhD program must have a master&#8217;s degree in history, and applications are only accepted for a fall start. The priority deadline is December 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optional applications for teaching assistant positions and Graduate School Fellowships are also accepted during the admissions application process.
