This session is a discussion among two faculty members, one in the sciences and one in the humanities, about approaches and insights for managing unstructured time to support scholarship\/creative work.  We discuss the challenges and opportunities of unstructured time, intentionality in prioritizing time for scholarship\/creative work, strategies used by the speakers, and insights they have gained that will help graduate students cultivate skills and strategies to support their own professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communicating Research: How to Leverage Social Media<\/strong><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaker: Erika Kramer<\/strong>, the Social & Digital Specialist in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Division of Marketing, Communications & University Relations. She oversees 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s main social media accounts, developing strategies and content for both organic and paid initiatives, and supervises a team of student social media employees and content creators. Her background also includes an emphasis on search engine optimization (SEO).

<\/strong>This session will explore ways to communicate academic research on social media, including best practices for optimizing your profile, tailoring content to specific platforms and reaching your target audience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarly publishing and open access<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaker: Stephanie Surach<\/strong>, <\/strong>51ÁÔÆæ Social Sciences Librarian. Stephanie is a member of the Research Services Team of the User Services Division and member of the Scholarly Communications Committee at 51ÁÔÆæ Libraries.

This workshop will define the important concepts, discuss the recent\u00a0trends, and provide practical\u00a0guidance to navigate the publishing landscape across the disciplines. We\u2019ll\u00a0explain the difference between various open access options,\u00a0clarify important terminology from author submission guidelines,\u00a0and describe how new library\/publisher contracts can benefit you.

Forging the path to thesis and dissertation completion:  Timelines and goals as your compass.<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>Larger projects such as theses and dissertations are complex and can sometimes be daunting. Developing a detailed timeline of the anticipated steps along the way is often a centrally important task. In this workshop, elements of timeline planning and goal-setting for thesis and dissertation projects will be discussed with pragmatic suggestions. Come with a specific project in mind, and we\u2019ll begin the work of mapping the project and developing a timeline.

Developing a writing habit is important for graduate students, and writing groups are gaining popularity to support students in writing theses and dissertations. What does joining or leading a writing group require?  How do you approach participation in a writing group?  This session will address what writing groups are, how they work, how to show up ready to participate and benefit, and what\u2019s required to lead or convene a writing group.  The panel includes two faculty who have been conveners of writing groups and a recent 51ÁÔÆæ PhD who used a writing group to complete her dissertation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keys to Successful Grant Writing for Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Graduate Students<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Presenters: Office of Research: Kari Whittenberger-Keith and Michelle Schoenecker<\/strong>
Designed for the grant writer with limited experience, this presentation starts from the premise that nothing succeeds like a good idea. But a good idea is not enough. There are other important ingredients of success, from assembling a winning team to achieving a strong match between the idea and a potential sponsor. This talk presents key concepts related to success in grant writing . It stresses the importance of planning over wiring, and presents the sponsor as a potential ally, not an adversary.
