{"id":1925,"date":"2026-01-23T09:15:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T15:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/governmentrelations\/?p=1925"},"modified":"2026-01-23T09:15:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T15:15:31","slug":"guidance-on-federal-immigration-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/governmentrelations\/guidance-on-federal-immigration-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidance on\u00a0federal\u00a0immigration\u00a0actions\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ continues to&nbsp;monitor&nbsp;federal&nbsp;immigration&nbsp;actions&nbsp;and issues&nbsp;that&nbsp;affect our&nbsp;students,&nbsp;employees&nbsp;and campus visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;remains&nbsp;committed to keeping our community&nbsp;safe and&nbsp;informed so all can navigate rights, responsibilities and resources related to law and policy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ will not provide information on the immigration status of its students,&nbsp;faculty&nbsp;or staff unless required by law.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;offers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/governmentrelations\/federal-government-priorities\/outside-agents-campus-protocol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this guidance<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;what to do if you are contacted by or&nbsp;come into contact with&nbsp;someone&nbsp;representing&nbsp;a government agency in a campus workspace. The university\u2019s&nbsp;guidance has&nbsp;not changed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guidance includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Immediately&nbsp;calling&nbsp;the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department&nbsp;at 414-229-4627&nbsp;(24\/7)&nbsp;or&nbsp;the 51ÁÔÆæ Office of Legal Affairs&nbsp;(business hours)&nbsp;at 414-229-4278.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Agents are free to enter any public areas but must have a valid search warrant to enter a non-public area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not give your consent to allow an agent to enter a non-public area.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public areas may include reception, waiting areas and&nbsp;lobbies,&nbsp;open dining areas such as cafeterias,&nbsp;restrooms&nbsp;and other&nbsp;common areas&nbsp;accessible by members of the public without screening or escort.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non-public areas include private offices and laboratories; private residential rooms; classrooms, conference\/meeting rooms and lecture halls that are currently in use; and other secured or restricted-access areas&nbsp;designated&nbsp;for instructional, research, or building and campus operational use.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately,&nbsp;the&nbsp;51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;Police&nbsp;Department has&nbsp;a set of&nbsp;procedures and practices&nbsp;it follows related to immigration enforcement. 51ÁÔÆæPD is committed to providing exceptional service to all members of the community regardless of immigration status.\u202f&nbsp;The procedures include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>51ÁÔÆæPD will not&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in federal immigration enforcement&nbsp;operations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Federal agents must use\u00a0appropriate legal\u00a0processes if they are on campus and wish to contact individuals about enforcement-related issues.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>51ÁÔÆæPD&nbsp;does not&nbsp;routinely and regularly practice the&nbsp;collection of&nbsp;information about a person\u2019s immigration status.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>51ÁÔÆæPD officers will not detain or arrest an individual solely based on a suspected violation of immigration law.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An individual\u2019s immigration status does not affect their ability to file a police report with 51ÁÔÆæPD.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An individual\u2019s immigration status does not&nbsp;determine&nbsp;whether 51ÁÔÆæPD will provide campus and community safety-related services and will only be relevant if the individual is involved in serious crimes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For areas that are off campus, the Milwaukee Police Department has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/city.milwaukee.gov\/ImageLibrary\/Groups\/mpdAuthors\/SOP\/130-FOREIGNNATIONALS-DIPLOMATICIMMUNITY-IMMIGRATIONENFORCEMENT1.pdf#page=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immigration enforcement policies<\/a>.&nbsp;In addition, the City of Milwaukee has posted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/city.milwaukee.gov\/cityclerk\/know-your-rights-and-available-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of resources<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find&nbsp;up-to-date information on immigration resources&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/government-relations\/federal-updates\/international-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this Universities of Wisconsin webpage<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ continues to&nbsp;monitor&nbsp;federal&nbsp;immigration&nbsp;actions&nbsp;and issues&nbsp;that&nbsp;affect our&nbsp;students,&nbsp;employees&nbsp;and campus visitors.&nbsp; 51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;remains&nbsp;committed to keeping our community&nbsp;safe and&nbsp;informed so all can navigate rights, responsibilities and resources related to law and policy.&nbsp;&nbsp; 51ÁÔÆæ will not provide information on the immigration status of its students,&nbsp;faculty&nbsp;or staff unless &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":27282,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","uwm_wg_additional_authors":[]},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1925","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-university-updates"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
