{"id":1717,"date":"2025-05-07T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/governmentrelations\/?p=1717"},"modified":"2025-05-15T14:51:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T19:51:42","slug":"uwm-office-of-research-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/governmentrelations\/uwm-office-of-research-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ Office of Research Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The following updates were shared on May 7 as part of a more comprehensive email from the 51ÁÔÆæ Office of Research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-updates-from-the-national-science-foundation\">Updates from the National Science Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Science Foundation (NSF) has recently announced several major agency changes, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/updates-on-priorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new agency priorities<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-01396-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">directive<\/a>\u00a0to stop awarding all funding actions until further notice. In addition, NSF will adopt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/indirect-cost-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard 15% Indirect Cost Rate<\/a>\u00a0(IDC) for new grants and cooperative agreements awarded after May 5. (It will not apply retroactively to existing awards.) The APLU, ACE, and 13 universities have since filed a joint<a href=\"https:\/\/aplu-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/APLU-NSF-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0to halt the new IDC policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NIH and DOE also have recently issued a 15% cap on IDC rates, which are also in litigation. As these lawsuits work their way through the courts,\u00a0when preparing your proposal budget to any federal agency, please use 51ÁÔÆæ&#8217;s current federally negotiated rates as indicated in the\u00a051ÁÔÆæ Budget Development Tool, posted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/tools\/\">Office of Research Toolbox webpage<\/a>. Do not use a 15% IDC rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Questions?<\/strong>\u00a0Contact the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/officeofresearch\/proposal-resources\/pre-award-assignments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pre-Award Specialist<\/a>\u00a0assigned to your unit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bridge-funding-for-canceled-nsf-grants\"><strong>Bridge Funding for Canceled NSF Grants<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, the Spencer Foundation announced a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spencer.org\/grant_types\/rapid-response-bridge-funding-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program<\/a>\u00a0for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been canceled by NSF. Grants in the amount of $25,000 will be made to address immediate needs following grant cancellations, including data collection and\/or analysis, project closure with community partners, or preparing grant proposals to continue the research.
