With the MS program of study, you will develop into a professional that is not just a technical worker, but a leader that can manage and carry out complex projects that include development, analysis, interpretation, and communication of results. The typical course of study takes two years to complete.<\/p>\n<p>The Geosciences MS program provides our students with a strong scientific background and intensive research experience, culminating in a formal thesis. The MS degree requires both coursework and research. These help the student build observation, critical thinking, quantification, and presentation skills. Our goal is for students to gain deep knowledge in a subfield of geosciences and a broad understanding of the overall discipline. The student is assigned a preliminary advisor at the time of initial enrollment based on the student\u2019s expressed research interests.\u00a0<\/p> <h3>Proposal for Thesis<\/h3> <p>Prior to the formal undertaking of thesis research, the student must prepare a written proposal for the thesis problem including an estimate of costs to be incurred. Copies of the proposal are to be distributed to the faculty advisor and the Department reading file. One copy is to be placed in the student\u2019s permanent Department file. An abstract of the proposal is to be distributed to each Department faculty member for comment and critique.<\/p> <h3>Thesis<\/h3> <p>The student must write an acceptable thesis embodying the results of original research completed under the direction of the advisor.\u00a0The thesis must be approved by the student\u2019s examining committee, consisting of the research advisor plus two other PhD-holding scientists, one of which may be outside of 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p> <h3>Comprehensive Examination<\/h3> <p>The student must pass a final oral examination in defense of the thesis. At the discretion of the examining committee, this examination may include topics in addition to the thesis. The first part of this examination will be a public presentation of the thesis. Other important dates and deadlines can be found by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/dates-and-deadlines\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Stop calendars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Admission<\/h3> <p>An applicant must meet\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/admission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate School requirements<\/a>\u00a0plus the following departmental requirements to be considered for admission to the program:<\/p> <ol> \t<li>Hold a bachelor\u2019s degree in one of the natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics.<\/li> \t<li>Have an appropriate background in aspects of the geosciences relevant the intended field of study.<\/li> \t<li>Provide the names of at least three (3) people who can submit letters of recommendation speaking to your research skills and ability to succeed in a research-based MS program.<\/li> \t<li> \t<p>Provide a reason statement.<\/p> \t<\/li> <\/ol> <p>Applicants may be admitted with specific program-defined course deficiencies provided that the deficiencies amount to no more than two courses.<\/p> <p>The student is expected to satisfy deficiency requirements within three enrolled semesters. No course credits earned in making up deficiencies may be counted as program credits required for the degree. A geology student who lacks field training must acquire the training not later than the summer following initial enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Application to all graduate programs are completed through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/admission\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Graduate School<\/a>.
