Our students come from all over the country and the world because\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/about-milwaukee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee<\/a>\u202fis a great place to live and learn! Detailed information on how to apply to our graduate programs can be found below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-apply\">How to Apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion uwm-p-accordion--icon-left-circle\" data-accordion-prefix-classes=\"uwm\" data-accordion-cool-selectors=\"1\"><button class=\"uwm-p-accordion--toggle-button size-p-md\">Expand All<\/button>\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Check Admissions Requirements<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Minimum eligibility requirements including undergraduate GPA and English language proficiency can be found on the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/admission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ Graduate School website<\/a>.\u202f Please note that these are\u202fminimum requirements. Acceptance is a competitive process based on the pool of applicants to the Geosciences Department.\u202f Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee acceptance into our program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not have a required set of prior coursework for admission. We recognize that our graduate students come from a wide variety of scholastic backgrounds, including traditional geoscience programs, but also related fields in STEM.\u202f However,\u202fyou must have an appropriate background in aspects of the geosciences relevant to your intended field of study.&nbsp; If you are unsure whether your background is likely to meet the eligibility requirements, it is best to contact the professors in your chosen field of study.\u202f If the admissions committee decides that you have most of the necessary coursework, but are missing a few key classes, they can recommend admission with a deficiency, and you would be allowed to take those background courses simultaneously with your graduate courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Learn About Faculty Research<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Graduate students work very closely with a faculty research advisor, so it is important to identify a faculty member or members whose interests match your own.<strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Examine<\/strong>\u202f<strong>faculty research profiles<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/our-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u202f<\/a>to determine if your interests match our current department expertise.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Send the faculty member(s) an email<\/strong> introducing yourself, describing your background and interests, and inquiring about possible graduate research positions with that faculty member. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Learn How Most Students Fund Their Studies<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Most of our students are admitted with significant financial support as a teaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), or fellowship.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/funding-your-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about the different types of financial support<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you would like to be considered for any 51ÁÔÆæ Graduate Fellowship, be sure to submit your application by December 15 for Fall admission. (Fellowships are not available during Spring admission, but you can apply later as a continuing student.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you think you are eligible for the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/aop-fellowship-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Opportunity Program Fellowship<\/a>, contact the Graduate Advisor (<a href=\"mailto:bowlesj@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bowlesj@uwm.edu<\/a>) as soon as possible. Many of our incoming students have received this award.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Application Checklist<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Your application should be submitted online at the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.uwm.edu\/register\/?id=442d088c-4d8a-4572-be4e-00a5267ed73b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graduate School application portal<\/a>; nothing needs to be sent directly to the department.\u202f You will need to provide the following information:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Basic information<\/strong> such as contact information and planned course of study.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reasons Statement<\/strong>. Instead of an open-ended personal statement, we ask you to specifically address the following 5 points.&nbsp; These tie into our evaluation rubric and help us better assess your candidacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Why a graduate degree?\u202f <\/strong>Explain why you are seeking a research-based graduate degree.\u202f What skills and knowledge do you hope to gain, and how will this help you pursue your long-term career goals?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<strong>Why 51ÁÔÆæ?<\/strong>\u202fThe geoscience field is very broad, and not every department can have expertise in every geoscience discipline. What topics within the field of geoscience excite you most?\u202f Explain how you see your own research interests overlapping with specific 51ÁÔÆæ Geosciences Department expertise.\u202f If you have discussed possible thesis or dissertation topics with 51ÁÔÆæ faculty, explain what excites you about these topics.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<strong>Research Experience.\u202f<\/strong>51ÁÔÆæ Geosciences graduate programs are research-based, so we are looking for any prior experience with scientific research, or evidence documenting your enthusiasm for scientific research. Describe any previous research experience and what you accomplished. For MS applicants, this may include independent research conducted with a faculty member, research projects that were part of a class, or relevant internships or volunteer work. PhD applicants should describe their MS research, plus any other experience.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ability to persist through challenge.\u202f<\/strong>\u202fThe graduate student experience and life in general can pose a variety of challenges. Describe an example of how you have shown resilience and\/or perseverance in the pursuit of your academic goals or in your personal life and how you have grown as a result.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<strong>Any\u202f additional information that you want us to know or that will help us better understand your application.\u202f <\/strong>Do you have strengths that might not be obvious from other parts of your application? (And what specific accomplishments demonstrate those strengths?) Are there any parts of your application that you would like to explain in more detail, in your own voice? (For example, an explanation for a low grade?)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transcripts<\/strong> from any degree-granting institution (BS or MS).&nbsp; Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. If you are admitted, you will need to provide official transcripts at that time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Letters of Recommendation. <\/strong>Have names and contact information (email addresses) for 3 people who can write recommendation letters on your behalf. It is a good idea to ask recommenders whether they are willing to write your letters first.\u202f Usually recommenders are geosciences faculty, but they can also be employers in geologic fields.\u202f Once you input the email addresses of your 3 recommenders into the site, it will automatically send email requests to those recommenders.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Application Fee. <\/strong>A $75 application fee can be paid directly on the website.&nbsp; Fee waivers are available in the following cases:&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Application fee grants are available to applicants who have completed or are currently completing <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/panthera-application-fee-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eligible graduate school preparation programs<\/a>. (<em>Examples<\/em> include the 51ÁÔÆæ STEM-Inspire Program, McNair Scholars, the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), and the HBCU Scholar Recognition Program.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicants who attend the Graduate School Open House <strong>on the 51ÁÔÆæ campus in Milwaukee<\/strong> may receive an application fee waiver. (Restrictions apply.\u00a0 Be sure to read details.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A limited number of additional application fee waivers are available for <strong>U.S. citizens and permanent residents only<\/strong>. You may request a waiver by e-mailing the Geosciences Graduate Director (<a href=\"mailto:bowlesj@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bowlesj@uwm.edu<\/a>) to explain your situation and why you are requesting the waiver.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GRE scores NOT required.<\/strong> The Department of Geosciences no longer requires submission of GRE scores. Do not provide GRE scores.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For international students.&nbsp; <\/strong>Please see\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/cie\/international-admissions\/graduate-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Center for International Education<\/a>\u202ffor additional admissions requirements including how to demonstrate English language proficiency and how to submit transcripts that are not written in English. (Note that applicants seeking funding as a Teaching Assistant must meet a higher English language standard. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduate-assistants\/handbook\/international-assistants\/english-proficiency-for-international-teaching-assistants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See here for details<\/a>.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Timing and Application Deadlines<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>New graduate students can start either in Fall (September) or Spring (January) semesters. Most new students start in Fall because that is when we typically have the most available openings.\u202f However, if you apply for one semester and we cannot fit you in that semester, we can defer your application to the next semester when there may be space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fall Admission &#8211; Application Deadlines \u202f<\/strong>(starting the following September):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>December 15<\/strong>\u202fto receive full consideration for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51ÁÔÆæ Graduate Fellowships<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>January 15<\/strong>\u202fto receive full consideration for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/funding-your-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other types of funding<\/a>\u202f(including Teaching and Research Assistantships)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spring Admission &#8211; Application Deadline<\/strong>\u202f(starting the following January):\u202f<strong>September 15<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the January 15 deadline for fall application and the September 15 deadline for spring application are rolling \u2013 applications will be accepted past the deadline but\u202faccepted applicants who meet deadlines will have first\u202fpriority for teaching and research assistant support\u202fand\u202fwill receive\u202fnotification of\u202ftheir acceptance as early as late February (for Fall applicants).
