Faculty and students from across the region&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;including Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;gathered to share research on topics ranging from flood preparedness and trout\u2011stream restoration to urban greenway networks and cycling safety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference keynote was delivered by Dr. Julie&nbsp;Cidell&nbsp;(University of Illinois Urbana\u2013Champaign), who presented on the evolving geography of warehousing and&nbsp;logistics&nbsp;in the Milwaukee\u2013Chicago corridor. Her talk highlighted how the rapid expansion of warehousing to support online commerce is reshaping development patterns in urban, suburban, and rural communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-1-West-Lakes-2025-poster-225x300.webp\" alt=\"American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting Poster\" class=\"wp-image-9749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-1-West-Lakes-2025-poster-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-1-West-Lakes-2025-poster-768x1024.webp 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-1-West-Lakes-2025-poster.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The department was especially proud to celebrate the success of three 51ÁÔÆæ graduate students recognized for their outstanding work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Master\u2019s paper competition, Thea Brenner earned 1st place for her research on arts organizations in Milwaukee, and\u00a0Brianna\u00a0Sas\u2011Perez\u00a0earned 2nd place for\u00a0their\u00a0study of Milwaukee\u2019s best pizza.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the graduate student poster competition, Yiming Zhang received 3rd place for his work on spatial accessibility in Wisconsin\u2019s long\u2011term care facilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event&nbsp;showcased&nbsp;the strength of geographic research across the region and the impressive contributions of 51ÁÔÆæ students and faculty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2025-gis-day-at-uwm-nbsp-brings-big-energy-to-the-agsl-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp\">2025 GIS Day at 51ÁÔÆæ&nbsp;Brings Big Energy to the AGSL&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-3-GIS-Day-Pannel-Discussion-300x169.webp\" alt=\"The alumni panel at GIS Day. \" class=\"wp-image-9755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-3-GIS-Day-Pannel-Discussion-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-3-GIS-Day-Pannel-Discussion-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-3-GIS-Day-Pannel-Discussion.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Council hosted GIS Day @51ÁÔÆæ at the American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) on Nov. 21.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One hundred people attended the keynote event, a panel on \u2018Careers in GIS\u2019 featuring four 51ÁÔÆæ alumni who offered advice for students interested in GIS. Emily Sudar and Baldev Singh, both of whom majored in geography at 51ÁÔÆæ, emphasized the value of GIS and spatial data to local governments and&nbsp;business. Dominick Ratkowski, who completed his 51ÁÔÆæ degree in criminal justice, talked about his work at the Wauwatosa Police Department using GIS for crime prevention. Ryan Covington, who has his PhD in geography and works with the World Wildlife Fund, stressed the importance of continued learning on the job in the world of spatial data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-4-GIS-Day-Registration-300x225.webp\" alt=\"Student attending GIS Day.\" class=\"wp-image-9756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-4-GIS-Day-Registration-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-4-GIS-Day-Registration-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2026\/04\/Image-4-GIS-Day-Registration.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The day also featured workshops in QGIS, an&nbsp;open-source&nbsp;GIS&nbsp;app;&nbsp;using Python with GIS software;&nbsp;all maps for relating historic maps to current, georeferenced maps; and humanitarian mapping to&nbsp;assistwith disaster relief efforts around the world. Lunch was provided by the GIS Council, and after lunch there was a tour of the AGSL. She highlighted the shift from&nbsp;the&nbsp;early 2000s\u2019\u201clogistics&nbsp;sprawl\u201d to today\u2019s dual pattern of re-concentration in central cities and expansion into rural areas&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;changes that pose new environmental, economic, and social challenges. Seligman (Department of History, 51ÁÔÆæ) delivered a talk titled,&nbsp;\u201cThe Town of Milwaukee, Glendale, and the North Shore: Exploring the History of Suburban Governance in Wisconsin\u201d on Oct.&nbsp;31, 2025, at the American Geographical Society Library.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her presentation traced the development of governance on Milwaukee\u2019s North Shore from the 19th\u2011century Town of Milwaukee to the present day. As part of the Geography Field Work class,students&nbsp;have the opportunity to&nbsp;explore Lake Michigan in Milwaukee Harbor and learn how to take plankton, sediment,&nbsp;and water samples at a range of depths. They&nbsp;observe&nbsp;how water temperature, conductivity,&nbsp;and pH are&nbsp;monitored&nbsp;using different sensors.
