The\u00a0fall semester is well underway, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0pleased\u00a0be\u00a0writing this first Letter from the Chair since stepping into the position in August. Please join me in thanking\u00a0Professor\u00a0Ryan Holifield for his service\u00a0and leadership\u00a0in this role for the past four years.\u00a0During those\u00a0uncertain\u00a0years following the pandemic,\u00a0Dr. Holifield\u2019s\u00a0efforts\u00a0strengthened our community, refined our course policies and procedures, and\u00a0sustained our vibrant and diverse programs of research and teaching. I look forward to continuing this work and\u00a0to representing\u00a051ÁÔÆæ Geography as chair.\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0also like\u00a0to express my gratitude to\u00a0Geography faculty\u00a0and staff\u00a0for their\u00a0collective wisdom and\u00a0support\u00a0as I learn this new role.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fall 2025 has ushered in\u00a0new changes\u00a0across campus.\u00a051ÁÔÆæ recently welcomed a new chancellor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/chancellor\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Thomas Gibson<\/a>, who has served in this role since July.\u00a0The University\u00a0continues to navigate a challenging\u00a0higher education\u00a0landscape, particularly as the loss of federal research grants\u00a0compounds\u00a0already difficult budgetary circumstances. However, in\u00a0very exciting\u00a0news, this year\u2019s 51ÁÔÆæ\u00a0freshman\u00a0class\u00a0is the\u00a0largest\u00a0cohort\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen in a\u00a0decade,\u00a0and undergraduate enrollments are up\u00a0nearly four percent. Across campus, there is concerted focus on student success and\u00a0retention\u00a0and in Geography\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been implementing changes with these goals in mind.\u00a0We are committed to providing an enriching and inspiring educational experience for our\u00a0students.\u00a0In the past year,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0made changes to our undergraduate and minor curriculum to reduce barriers for graduation and to enhance student experiences. We look forward to\u00a0building on\u00a0these efforts in the coming year and are hosting\u00a0several\u00a0events\u00a0to\u00a0foster\u00a0community and connection in the department.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">One of the exciting events that is just around the corner is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uwm.edu\/westlakes2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">annual meeting of the West Lakes Regional Division of the American Association of Geographers<\/a>, which will take place October 23-25 here at UW-Milwaukee.\u00a0\u00a0We thank the leadership of Professors Hyejin Yoon and\u00a0Woonsup\u00a0Choi who have been coordinating the event together with graduate students and faculty members in Geography.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ggis.illinois.edu\/directory\/profile\/jcidell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Julie Cidell<\/a>\u00a0(University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)\u00a0will deliver the conference keynote and our Mayer Lecture on Friday, October 24 at the American Geographic Society Library.\u00a0\u00a0Her presentation is entitled \u201cThe Changing Landscapes of Logistics in the Milwaukee-Chicago Corridor.\u201d\u00a0Students and faculty from 51ÁÔÆæ will be sharing their work, alongside geographers presenting from across the region.\u00a0We\u00a0look\u00a0forward to hosting the event and welcoming geographers to 51ÁÔÆæ and to the Department of Geography.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another event that is coming up quickly is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/gis-council\/gisday\/gisday-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GIS Day at 51ÁÔÆæ<\/a>, which will take place on November\u00a01 in the American Geographic Society Library.\u00a0Workshops at the event range from a focus on Python for GIS with Arc Pro, to humanitarian mapping, to georeferencing with\u00a0Allmaps.\u00a0The event will also include lunch with professionals in the field and a social hour at the\u00a0Gasthaus\u00a0Pub.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"uwm-c-link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gammathetaupsilon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gamma Theta Upsilon<\/a>\u00a0(GTU) chapter held a pizza party in September and will be looking to register new members in the upcoming year, building on its recognition as one of four\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/alpha-mu-chapter-of-gtu-geographical-honor-society-named-2024-honors-chapter\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honors Chapters in 2024<\/a>.\u00a0Graduate students and faculty\u00a0are planning their participation at the annual\u00a0meeting of the Association of American Geographers which will take place next spring in San Francisco. We have many things to look\u00a0forward\u00a0in this academic year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;particularly easy times&nbsp;for&nbsp;higher education, but 51ÁÔÆæ Geography has always persevered and&nbsp;operated&nbsp;with&nbsp;an incredible&nbsp;resilience.&nbsp;We will continue to negotiate these&nbsp;uncertainties&nbsp;while supporting&nbsp;and serving&nbsp;our&nbsp;student, staff, faculty, and alumni community.&nbsp;There are also many exciting opportunities&nbsp;ahead&nbsp;and I know that we are up for the challenge.
