{"id":8463,"date":"2023-04-27T11:08:37","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T16:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/?page_id=8463"},"modified":"2024-12-18T14:29:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T20:29:17","slug":"ma-ms-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/students\/graduate\/ma-ms-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Master&#8217;s Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead-in\">There are three degree choices for students at the master&#8217;s level:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Master of Arts (MA) for students interested in human and cultural geography<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Master of Science (MS) for students interested in physical geography or GIS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joint Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Library Information Science (MLIS) for students interested in library or archival work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of our graduate students hold a a bachelor&#8217;s degree in geography, but we also consider applications from students with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in related fields such as urban planning, data science, economics, and other social sciences. We also are proud of our diverse student body within geography with many international graduate students in the geography department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Options abound within each degree including choosing a non-thesis track if there are no plans to continue on to a higher degree beyond the master&#8217;s degree. Most students will need to pass a final oral exam or complete required field work. The<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/academics\/?_program_type_facet=masters\"> academics section of this website<\/a> outlines the requirements for the different programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"default\">The MA and MS are typically completed in two years while the MA\/MLIS is typically completed in three to three and half years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of our master&#8217;s alumni go on to pursue a doctoral degree while others enter or advance their career in public policy, GIS, research, urban planning, conservation, library or archival work, surveying, or cartography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are a smaller program, and our students enjoy small classes and a tight knit community.
