Geographers study the &#8220;why&#8221;, the &#8220;how&#8221;, and the &#8220;where.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where things are located and why they are located where they are<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how places are connected to one another and how they may differ<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how places and peoples interact with the environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In investigating these themes, geographers study some of the world\u2019s most pressing issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>climate change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>water shortages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loss of biodiversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> globalization and economic systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>urban and regional development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>immigration and social change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>poverty and inequality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in geography is rich and exciting because it brings together theoretical and methodological approaches with data-grounded examinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 51ÁÔÆæ our faculty and students have diverse research interests and agendas, all united though through a passion for understanding more about the interactions among places, peoples, and environments. Our research, like our degree programs are organized around three areas: <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/research\/human-geography\/\">Human Geography and Urban Environments<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/research\/physical-geography\/\">Physical Geography and Environmental Studies<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geography\/research\/gisremote-sensing\/\">Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing<\/a>.
