{"id":12732,"date":"2025-09-02T14:59:04","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T19:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/?p=12732"},"modified":"2026-03-04T10:02:47","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T16:02:47","slug":"award-teaching-excellence-kahl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/award-teaching-excellence-kahl\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Emeritus receives American Meteorological Society award for teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Professor Emeritus <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/people\/kahl-jonathan\/\">Jonathan Kahl<\/a> has received one of the 2026 awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/ams\/about-ams\/ams-awards-honors\/2026-award-and-honors-recipients\/\">American Meteorological Society<\/a> (AMS). The AMS recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations of the weather, water, and climate community through its Awards and Honors program annually. Dr. Kahl is the recipient of the Edward N. Norenz Teaching Excellence Award, which is for transformative teaching and mentoring, seminal contributions to education literature, and for implementing international learning experiences that inspired generations of atmospheric scientists. He will officially receive his award at the 106th AMS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas (January 25-29, 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahl recently retired at the end of the Spring 2025 semester. His research areas consist of air pollution methodology, long-range atmospheric transport, air trajectory modeling and enhancing science education using technology. Since 2010, Kahl has been the director of the <em>51ÁÔÆæ Atmospheric Science Study Abroad in Mexico: Air Pollution and Ancient Cultures.\u00a0<\/em>This unique program is offered every January during the UWinteriM mini-semester. He also has offered the 40-50 hour course\u00a0<em>Meteorological Aspects of Air Pollution\u00a0<\/em>at a Mexican university each summer and is an author of seven children&#8217;s books about meteorology including\u00a0<em>The National Audubon Society First Field Guide to Weather\u00a0<\/em>(Scholastic, 1998).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-u-flex uwm-u-flex--wrap uwm-u-flex--left\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--icon-right uwm-c-button--icon-chevron uwm-u-mr-20 uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/ams\/about-ams\/ams-awards-honors\/2026-award-and-honors-recipients\/\" rel=\"\">View Full List of Awards and Honor Recipients<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Emeritus Jonathan Kahl has received one of the 2026 awards from the American Meteorological Society (AMS).
