{"id":12698,"date":"2025-08-25T15:48:40","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T20:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/?p=12698"},"modified":"2026-03-04T10:03:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T16:03:09","slug":"data-centers-consuming-water-the-conversati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/data-centers-consuming-water-the-conversati\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Water Policy talks about the extreme amounts of water used at data centers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a recent article for\u00a0<em>The Conversation<\/em>, Peyton McCauley, Water Policy Specialist, and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/people\/scanlan-melissa\/\">Professor Melissa Scanlan<\/a>, Director, of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u2019s Center for Water Policy\u00a0examined the growing water demands of data centers driven by artificial intelligence, and why transparency and a consistency in the tracking and reporting of water use is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>As demand for artificial intelligence technology boosts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/data-center-construction\/new-data-center-developments-august-2025\">construction and proposed construction<\/a>&nbsp;of data centers around the world, those computers require not just electricity and land, but also a significant amount of water. Data centers use water directly, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/interactive\/2024\/data-centers-tour-northern-virginia\/\">cooling water<\/a>&nbsp;pumped through pipes in and around the computer equipment. They also use water indirectly, through the water required to produce the electricity to power the facility.
