She keeps an eye on this tree because it always hosts a lot of ant activity (whether this says good things about the oak or bad, she doesn\u2019t know). Ants, famously, farm aphids. They protect the aphids from predators like ladybugs and move them to greener pastures. In return, they get to \u201cmilk\u201d the aphids by stroking the aphids\u2019 abdomen, harvesting the excess honeydew that is a by-product of the aphid\u2019s plant-juice feeding. According to Donald W. Stokes in <em>Discovering Insect Lives<\/em>, aphids that are farmed hang onto their honeydew longer and so produce larger droplets when they are milked, and they also produce more offspring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/ants-aphids11-1brz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/ants-aphids11-1brz.jpg\" alt=\"ants-aphids11-1brz\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/ants-aphids11-1brz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/ants-aphids11-1brz-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the absence of ants, aphids and a few other Homopterans \u201cleak\u201d honeydew onto the surrounding leaves, and other insects like flies and wasps land to feed on it.<\/p>\n<p>In the distance shot, check out how many little herds of <em>aphids<\/em> there are.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/xx-pupa10-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/xx-pupa10-1.jpg\" alt=\"xx-pupa10-1\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/xx-pupa10-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/xx-pupa10-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/12\/xx-pupa10-1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pupa (?) within the web was found on the same bur oak last year. It looks like something that the BugLady saw on \u201cX Files\u201d once.<\/p>\n<p>Go outside.
