  {"id":17002,"date":"2026-03-25T09:07:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=17002"},"modified":"2026-03-25T09:08:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:08:54","slug":"monarch-butterflies-spring-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/monarch-butterflies-spring-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Monarch Butterflies \u2013 Spring, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Howdy, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THEY\u2019RE COMING!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s barely spring, officially \u2013 way too early to be thinking about butterflies, right?\u00a0Nope.\u00a0The first butterflies of the year have already been reported on the Wisconsin Butterflies website (<a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinbutterflies.org\/butterfly\">Butterflies \u2014 wisconsinbutterflies.org<\/a>) (which also serves your Tiger beetle and Robber fly needs).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first butterflies are usually the anglewings (commas and Question Marks <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/anglewings\/\">Anglewings (Family Nymphalidae) \u2013 Field Station<\/a>) and the Mourning Cloaks <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/mourning-cloak-revisited\/\">Mourning Cloak Revisited \u2013 Field Station<\/a>.\u00a0Why?\u00a0Because they go through the winter as adults, tucked up into a sheltered spot (called a hibernaculum).\u00a0These are the species that are seen by people tapping maple trees in the Sugarbush during the warm days of late winter.\u00a0When the cold returns &#8211; and it always does, except in the bizarre spring of 2012 \u2013 they seek shelter again.\u00a0They are able to be abroad in early spring, before the wildflowers bloom, because they feed on sap from sap drips, juice from rotting fruits, and minerals from animal droppings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other early butterflies are species that overwintered as a chrysalis and emerged in spring &#8211; Cabbage Butterflies <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/cabbage-whites-and-sulphurs-redux\/\">Cabbage Whites and Sulphurs Redux \u2013 Field Station<\/a> and a couple of \u201cblue\u201d butterflies, the Eastern Tailed-Blue and the \u201cSpring\u201d Spring Azure <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/small-blue-butterflies-2\/\">Small Blue Butterflies \u2013 Field Station<\/a>.\u00a0In very warm years, early individuals of these species have been recorded in late March.\u00a0Our first Monarch sightings usually come in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to the Monarchs. A year ago, winter censuses of the eastern and western populations, Monarch Butterfly showed that numbers were down <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/the-monarch-butterfly-problem\/\">The Monarch Butterfly Problem \u2013 Field Station<\/a>. This year\u2019s census found eastern Monarchs occupying 64% more territory in Mexico\u2019s oyamel fir forests than last year.\u00a0Not a home run, but reason for optimism <a href=\"https:\/\/wimonarchs.org\/late-mar-2026-update-what-do-the-numbers-in-mexico-mean\/\">Late Mar. 2026 update: What do the numbers in Mexico mean? \u2013 Wisconsin Monarch Collaborative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monarchs are on the way! Check the Journey North interactive map &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.journeynorth.org\/map\/?map=monarch-adult-first&amp;year=2026&amp;season=spring\">Journey North Maps<\/a>.\u00a0For more information, see <a href=\"https:\/\/wimonarchs.org\/\">Wisconsin Monarch Collaborative<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/03\/monarch-cat22-3rz.webp\" alt=\"Monarch caterpillar with black, white, and yellow stripes feeding on a green milkweed leaf\" class=\"wp-image-17005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/03\/monarch-cat22-3rz.webp 400w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/03\/monarch-cat22-3rz-300x215.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Reese has built a wonderful community of butterfly-lovers who make reports to the Wisconsin Butterflies website; and while it is more anonymous, the Wisconsin Odonata Survey website (<a href=\"https:\/\/wiatri.net\/inventory\/odonata\/\">Wisconsin Odonata Survey<\/a>) contains a treasure trove of information.\u00a0Where do all those reports come from?\u00a0Us &#8211; they are two examples of Citizen\/Community Science projects here in Wisconsin!\u00a0Register with the site, keep track of the butterflies and\/or dragonflies\/damselflies you see on your walks or in your back yard (you need to take a nose count of the butterflies but not of the dragonflies), and then log on to record what you\u2019ve seen.\u00a0 Both sites accept pictures. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Journey North organization offers another Community Science project called the monarch larva monitoring project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mlmp.org\/\">Monarch Larva Monitoring Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go outside \u2013 look for butterflies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The BugLady<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"taxonomy-post_tag wp-block-post-terms\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/butterfly\/\" rel=\"tag\">Butterfly<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/caterpillar\/\" rel=\"tag\">caterpillar<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/chrysalis\/\" rel=\"tag\">chrysalis<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/larvae\/\" rel=\"tag\">larvae<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/monarch-butterfly\/\" rel=\"tag\">monarch butterfly<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Howdy, BugFans, THEY\u2019RE COMING!!!
